Newbi's first thoughts DE razor

Background:

My father gave me and electric razor as a kid. I disliked it immediately. Believe it or not I would always bleed some. After leaving home I bought a multi-blade razor (mach 3). It was an amazing improvement!!! My dad said I was nuts. I think he tried a cheap woman disposable once and was convinced all razors sucked.

After 15 years of using mach-3 I walked into an "art of shaving" store while on a business trip. I was intrigued but turned off by the prices.

Recently I decided to give it a try. However I now live in China. The Chinese tend to hate all things that look old fashioned. Thus finding a nice razor is next to impossible. So I bought a Merkur on ebay. In two weeks when I go to the USA I will pick it up.

However last week at a bazaar I found a $1 DE razor. Cheap as all get out! All pressed metal, poorly made. But I figured for a dollar I could give it a shot. It worked better than I thought... no nicks or cuts. However my shave was not as close as my mach 3.

Today I found that if I shaved twice I got a very close shave. First time with the grain the second time against the grain.

Summary:

Razor: no name Chinese brand
Blade: no name Chinese brand
shaving cream: left over Wal-mart foam
Brush: no name Chinese (supposedly badger hair)

Not bad .. interesting experience. I think I like holding the DE razor more than the mach-3 simply because I hate the flexing head on the mach-3.

Soon to try:
Merkur razor
high end cream
name brand blades.

Nice first post and welcome to B&B. You will find that with a DE, it does take a few passes to completely remove the stubble. Unlike the multiblade cartridges, the DE is not yanking the hair up and cutting it off at the base. You mentioned AoS. The next time you're in the states, you could pick up a quality cream there, instead of the can of foam. It is a bit pricey, but a little goes a long way. You can pick up a nice inexpensive badger or boar hair brush from any number of online vendors, many of whom are members here.
