What's new

Newbies get no respect.

Attempted to take advantage of an offer on B/S/T tonite. For the 6th time, I get the- sorry it's sold. This is after I posted PM sent( no other messages stating PM sent). Then 2 hours later, I send follow up PM and told it's sold. Feeling a bit like it's the boy's club and some folks pick/choose who to sell to. Those of us trying to take advantage of the deal have no idea who sent PM first. I typically gauge on who has message posted "PM sent". I realize some deals are popular deals and go quickly. Beginning to get old.

Just venting a bit. I'm sure there are those that have had success with B/S/T, but i'm striking out.

As it happened tonight, i know the member is online, because they responded to other forum posts. So if they had an offer, why not answer? I'm thinking they're waiting to see who responds, then chooses who to sell to.

Oh well...

I do not think it's you, most people who buy do not post in the thread "PM sent" they just send the PM. I have sold here twice and 9 times out of 10 the PM is sent without a forum post, usually within minutes of posting. You just need to be triple fast and religiously troll the bST forum for good deals.

Sorry about that, but a "PM sent" means nothing. As I understand it some of the mods would rather not see those posts, either. There is no firm rule about sale priority, but sellers usually take the first PM with a firm commitment. So ignore the posts, be the first to send a PM with a firm commitment, and you will probably get the item.

Sometimes a sale is popular, and the seller is drowning in PMs for a while. When I posted my last FS list, it took a few days to straighten everything out and answer all the messages. It took another full week before everything had arrived and I could call it done. So be patient, and assume good will.

I am a newbie and have made several good deals on the BS&T. Admittedly, I work at a computer most of the day so I can keep an eye out for deals. I have scored more than once, so I'm convinced there is no favoritism. Hang in there and keep your eyes peeled. Keep on keeping on.

DtM,

Keep in mind that this isn't the classifieds or craigslist or eBay. The BST is a forum in which the members can sell their no longer loved gear and they usually do it at very good, sometimes terrific prices. They do this because they're not trying to make a buck but rather to defray the costs of their hobby while helping out other members. Sometimes you're just too late sending a PM to win an item, but it could also be that they're showing preference in who they sell to. Some members (myself included) will sell to badged members (contributor, active duty, veteran) before unbadged, but there's also a definite tendency to sell or even PIF stuff to newbies.

Be patient, contribute to the forums and help out others and I can pretty much guarantee that after a year you'll wonder where the hell all the stuff sitting in your shave den came from.

Correct spelling for newbies is "Noob". Cheers!

All joking aside, you gotta be quick on the BST. I was pm'ing a new member who was trying to score a Fat Boy and he got one the first time he tried. You just never know.

I wouldn't put that much thought into it I have bought from 3 members and I did not get one that I wanted I think the king bought it but he didn't:thumbup: say Pm sent I have to agree I think some people just send PM... First come and first serve best of luck to you...

Don't take it personal, the BST is like a shark tank in a feeding frenzy. Try posting something of your own that is desired, then go live your life for two hours away from the site and come back to see how many PMs you have to sort through to see who was the first to offer payment. There is no conspiracy, just a lot of competition for the same things. Don't let it get you down. The "PM sent" is discouraged because it doesn't mean anything, and it can be used to deter other offers.

as others have said, you win some, you loose some.

send a PM, don't bother stating "PM SENT" and sit back and wait.

some will say "first PM gets it" other don't. the time you spend typing "PM sent" may be the time needed that someone else sends a PM.

if you get a reply great, if not, move on.

as "mark" aka "oakshott" said above, they are not obligated to sell to anyone. I haven't had any feeding frenzies on my BST (aside from a BRW), but if i get a PM from a guy with 10 posts, all entering PIFs in the past 2 days and he wants to buy, i sit on it and see what transpires. if a member with 500 quality posts and has an active duty badges sends me a PM....guess what, he'll get it every time.

on a side note, best to post this in "SITE FEEDBACK" next time or a post in the BST discussion thread. no need to call out the seller (which is easy to find in this case) as he did nothing wrong.

Sorry but there is no reason for you to whine when you have no idea if someone Pm'd the member first. You are a brand new member with less than 100 posts. Take some time and learn how things work without getting all worked up about it. What goes on this forum may not be the same as others you possibly have visited. I've learned that the etiquette here is VERY different than some other sites I visit which nine times out of ten is a good thing.

Welcome to the B/B hopefully next time you have better luck.

LOL, coming from another noob(see I got it right this time) Firstly, not "whining", only stating a concern. I totally understand how the B/S/T works- and read the rules so I understand these members selling items can actually sell them to whomever they want, after waiting to see who all PM's this is the crux of my concern. 2nd, don't post as if you have extensive experience- you've been a member for 11 days. I'll listen to the veterans with more than 47 posts and have been a member longer than an antibiotic cycle

Thanks, veteran posters for the input. Some of your answers made perfect sense. I'll keep trying.

Respect is Earned.
I've been told that an item is mine providing a Conus buyer doesn't want it first. I didn't get it.
I've even had no reply from a PM stating I would like to buy and will pay the extra for postage.
No whining just sucked it up and got on with it.

Some good advice above. I don't put PM sent - just send a PM. As a non-CONUS member I know that sometimes people prefer to sell only CONUS - it is easier for them and often they think (incorrectly) that you must go to the post office - that is just how things are.

Work on the basis that 95% + of people here are fantastic, generous and honourable and you will go well :)

If I had a nickel for every BST sale that slipped by me I'd be a rich, rich man.
I actually scored my Rooney Finest only because the baby was crying and I was up at 4:30am.
I logged into the site and found a sale was posted just as I was on. Even then, I was the backup to somebody else.
I'm talking only a minute or two here.

Luckily I got it.
I'm just saying what everyone else has said. Right time, right place and you'll cash in.
Remember too that the BST isn't a lazy river. It's a fast moving flood most of the time.
Something will come up sooner or later.

Can't say I've noticed it the way you've experienced it, but on several occasions my PMs haven't even been acknowledged in any way. Might be an issue with the messaging system, might be that I'm not in CONUS, but there's nothing I can do about it...

In the five years that I've been a member here, membership has increased by quite a bit, with a corresponding spike in traffic on the B/S/T.
A while back, the mods had to tweak BST rules and features so as to better accommodate all the traffic.
The success of the site has come at a bit of a price.
Success on the BST now involves a good measure of shrewdness, patience and luck. Hang in there.

You have to act fast around here. I purchased a razor through B/S/T and got it only 6 minutes after it was listed. I have little doubt that had it been longer, the razor probably would have been gone. BTW, the seller and I didn't know each other nor had we ever interacted in any way prior to the sale.
