newbies first shave with murker hd

Well used my new Mekur hd for the first time. I ended up with 3 nicks, this surprised me as I don’t normally nick myself. Anyway enjoyed the shave, used a Derby blade and not the Merkur as advised yesterday. Any tips on how not to cut myself would be appreciated, or is it just a matter of being more careful?

Hello, welcome to B & B. I too started with a new Merkur and had some mixed results at first. To be honest, I almost gave up. I recommend making sure you are giving you face enough prep time. Watch mantic's shave tutor videos on YouTube to see how it is done. Also, the Derby blade is popular, but may or may not be the best blade for you. I would recommend a sampler pack from West Coast Shaving. I was amazed how reasonable these are. While you wait for that to arrive, you could try the American Personna blade as sold by Wal-Mart, Dollar General, and some grocery stores. It has mixed reviews, but is worth trying. I also would not discount Merkur blades entirely, as some people like them.

Sangman,

Rich lather, easy razor pressure, and take your time. Skill comes with practice, and you're on the way.

Welcome to the world of gentlemen.

Re: cutting yourself, I think the most common cause of cuts is sideways motion of blade (local slice).

I generally only get these if I'm careless around the chin area because I'm doing very short strokes from a standing start. It's much easier to cut yourself if you're starting with the blade stationary on your skin. If anything, it encounters less resistance slicing than travelling in the appropriate cutting direction.

Try a little initial motion into the stroke as you're setting the blade onto your skin to avoid this.
