Newbie thinking of a good brush

Hello all,

I am a newbie to DE, but I've been wetshaving for several years. I started out with an AOS travel brush and then got an eShave fine badger brush. I followed that with one I bought as part of a shaving set off eBay (no name known).

I mostly use creams, but like to try the occassional soap, and I've recently gone from face lathering to using a bowl to build my lather.

I'm interested in a good quality super badger brush, but don't really know much about the various brands. I like the history of a Rooney, and it looks like they've got a good following, but the Shavemacs intrigue me as well. I also like the look of the Kents.

My target price range is $125 or less (assuming I buy a new brush). Any good recommendations?

Have you considerred a custom brush? You may well end up with a bigger bang for your buck...Mr. Rudy Vey is my recommendation, he is a member on here too.

I ordered a Mühle Silvertip (will receive it in a few days), according to different feedbacks it is a kind of "medium" brush, not floppy, but not too stiff either, it is in-between the two extremes, but it is still really luxurious and soft on the tips.
I think it's a good value too (at least here in Europe) as the one I took was 60€ for a 23mm.

I contacted a few days back Mühle regarding the links between Mühle and Edwin Jagger, and it appears the silvertip knots are made by Mühle and are the same for both Edwin and Muhle. So if you can find an EJ, it will be the same.

I'm also intrigued by the Kim Son. It looks like a great deal. Any thoughts on adding that to my list?

What kind of size do you want?

I would also add Simpsons to the list, they are a lot more affordable than most people seem to think. I have had 4 and only one cost over $100. You could even get a Chubby 1 in Best for the top of your price range. Though you may be better served with a Duke.

+1 on the simpsons Duke!

I ordered myself a custom Shavemac Silvertip this morning. :thumbup1: Now the wait for delivery begins...

you can tell your better half that it is for a great cause heh. If you mention it now, maybe it will be forgotten about in 6 weeks. Actually who am I kidding really, the better half will keep that gem hidden away. So when that KitchenAid mixer with a 6 speed manual transmission and titanium mixing heads shows up, you'll have a great shaving brush.

Nice choice!

Those knots are superb, and the handles well-made.
I got the Olive wood one, with the metal foot.

I have the EJ medium silver tip and now that I'm beginning to understand it's perfomance difference to their best hair, I'm loving it. Luxurious feel and in faux horn, a beautiful looker! Need to be careful with size though. I feel the large size handle may have been preferred but whose quibbling? A wonderful, well made brush that wont disappoint.
