Newbie question: Difference in shaving at night versus the morning

The difference? One you're shaving when it's the dark, the other... in all seriousness though, there is no difference. Some folk prefer night, others morning. I favour morning personally so I can enjoy a close shave throughout the day

Bill Cosby to Ray Charles: "Why are you shaving with the lights out, Ray? You're going to cut yourself."

Ray Charles: "Man, I been shavin' in the dark all my life."

I'm a runner, and usually run in the afternoon or at night. Therefore, I shave at night before bed because the sweat irritates my face. That, and I can shave against the grain, let it heal and be fine for the day ahead.

In my opinion, time of day has nothing to do with the quality of shave that you get. Most likely you can blame road rash on your technique, prep, or the products that you're using. Unless you get a sunburn during the day or your technique changes for whatever reason, the shave shouldn't change much.

This looks the type of question that a 10-year vet of wet shaving would ask, not a newbie. This type of thing shouldn't even be on your mind. Work on your technique, try out some different blades, try some different soaps/creams, and good shaves will come.

WOW! I never thought there were so many people who shaved at night, i thought i was the only one. I also thought people shave in the morning so everyone can see they have a nice, fresh, clean, BBS shaved face without even a spec of shadow or stubble, lol

Time of day doesn't affect the quality of the shave for me. During the week I shave in the evening as I prefer to shower after work, plus I'm not good in the mornings. Weekends and holidays I generally shower and shave in the morning but it's a bit later on after a coffee.

I get an equally good shave whenever I have it.

I usually shave within an hour or two after I wake up. That could be anytime between noon or 8PM.

Right now it's 6:30 AM where I am, 3:30 AM at home and I just got to the hotel.

My best shaves are always after a shower with the best prep. My worst shaves are when I'm in a hurry.

+1 for this.

Since I retired, I have started to shave at night, late. Very calm and peaceful, no morning rush. Shower + shave, really good prep, 2 careful passes and touch-up = 20 zen-like minutes. Then zzzzz.

I shave in the evenings, and I do it before I shower *pause for gasping to stop*. Now, I DO wash my face before I shave, and use very hot water prior to the first pass (I then switch to cool water). I say this to tell you that morning vs evening shouldn't matter. Just make sure you face is as hydrated as you can, and take your time.

The only other thing I could think of is if the Proraso is somehow irritating your skin. Compare the ingredients with the EJ soap. Maybe try the EJ soap at night for comparison too. Hope things smooth out for you.

I agree with others that it is most likely technique that is giving you the problems you're experiencing. I hope you get it sorted out.
As for night shavers, I'm one of them.
I find I have more time to relax and not skimp on any of the steps. I would dearly love to move to morning shaving, but with the straight especially I would have to get up 30-45 minutes earlier. Since our master bath is in the bedroom, getting up earlier would wake my wife. She gets up early enough, so that's not an option.
I could probably do it on my current schedule if I switched exclusively to the DE or SE. But you'd have to shoot me to make me give up my straights.

I have shaved night or day but really like night shaving since I'm not rushed and can get all zoned out. Its also a simple enough routine that you can use it to forget about the day before sleeping.

As far as my experience goes, I used to shave in the morning until I realized that showering, shaving, dressing up, having breakfast and brushing my teeth took me a lot of time (up to an hour and a half). So I decided to do it before going to bed - BTW, during the Summertime I shower after getting back home, so I shave before hitting the bed.

Something else: close shaving lets me shave every 36 to 48 hours, add to the later that sometimes I shave quite aggresively so my skin won't look good (newbie here, it takes some skill in order to understand whow to do things right, part of the good things about SR DE blade shaving). Applying a healing cream will work during the night, so in the morning my face will look alright.

Just to wrap it up, what is best for you is a matter of personal trial and error.

I'm not a dermatologist or any form of specialist for that matter. However, while I doubt there is a major difference, if you sleep at night with an A/C on, you're skin may be a tad drier than in the evening after a full day. It may have something to do with natural oils? But again. I doubt it.

I'm a fairly new DE shaver, and I've never shaved in the morning since getting my first DE. The earliest I've shaved was in the afternoon on a day off. There's many reasons for this, one being that I prefer to shower at night because it helps me sleep (so shaving naturally happens then), and I also enjoy my shaves so much that I use the time to relax and unwind. Nothing beats hopping out of the shower, opening the door to clear the steam, and listening to some relaxing music while I shave with the door wide open. I don't want to rush through that newfound ME time that I've been savoring every couple days since I got my DE89 in the mail a couple months ago.

I tend to find the morning routine a little too rushed and chaotic, so when I have shaved the morning, I'll almost always get those hurried errors creep in and get cut to bits. So I've always (even in cart days) shaved later in the day when I can relax and take the time. Either late in the afternoon or early evening works best for me.

Strangely enough, this is the exact reason I shave in the mornings prior to the workday. I wake up 10 minutes earlier than I used to but that's no longer a big deal. If I skip the morning shave I usually feel "off" throughout the day. I guess it's just become a part of my routine.

however i nice morning shave on weekends can def start a day well.
