newbie question about Nibs

$2013-04-22 17.18.51.jpg

referring to the EF nib on the Kaweco Sport which is 14C 585. Also how interchangeable are the nibs? Can I order an Italic nib and expect it to fit in one of the pens? or every brand has its own shape/size? What to look for? like if its same length/width? or shape is a factor also?

Thank You!
Goran.

Kaweco offers various nib sizes but it isn't just the nib that is replaced. It is the section. Unscrew the old and screw-in the new. As for other pens, it really depends on the pen/feed/nib. Some nibsare interchangeable some are not. There are popular sizes of nibs but a great of deal of it is simply to try a combination.

Not all gold nibs are flexible. As a matter of fact, most modern gold nibs are not flexible.

You will find most vintage pens have specific nibs to the model, many of which are not easily interchanged. Length, diameter, and thickness all play a part in whether a nib will work or fit.

Your Kaweco Sport will have a tough nib to find and order.

I have old Kaweco so I guess even those wont fit .. this one looks like a clip-in/push-in type not a screw in

Goran's pen is a vintage piston filler with the semi-hooded nib. I would leave that pen alone.

I won't risk it then .. I guess i'll look up some affordable italic pen instead of just a nib. I was planing to try a nib on one of the others pens not the kaweco .. like the one with the huntco nib .. that one is a push in that looks pretty much circular.

Not all gold nibs are flexible, some are stiff, I think the example you are showing above would be a stiff nib, if you have tried to flex it. some have a bit of spring which will give some line variation but not a whole lot, others can flex from a fine line to a triple broad. That nib you probably shouldnt try to flex out as it isnt meant to

you can see the difference here, the black "Syn" was done with a dip pen that has flex, notice the major difference in line variation, the second blue on was done with my pelikan steel nib which has spring, there is line variation but not a whole lot

as for interchanging nibs, as long as you are within a given brand there is a good chance they will fit, but not always. I believe you can interchange kawecos from one to another in the regular nibs, but im not sure about your hooded kind

Nice illustration .. yeah a huge difference now that you put them side to side .. I didn't really tried to flex it because I don't wan't to mess it up without knowing. But yeah judging by the comparison you made I think it will be on the stiff side so won't mess with it.

Thanks for the fast input .. you guys rock :euro:

btw how hard "pull" it needs for a flex one to flex .. I've seen some videos and tutorials but I can't really tell if that's easy pressure/pull or they use some more force to pull on the down stroke. As I understand one needs to pull on the down stroke only. In case I go hunt some vintage ones to know how to judge them.

My dips take nothing I have to put more effort into not flexing them... and it doesn't take a lot to spread them full out...the pelikan takes about what you would use writing with a ball point pen

It should be fairly natural and only done when pulling the nibs straight back or you can damage them or roll a tine over on the other one

Also flex has to do with how quickly the tines snap back into place, my dips do this well my pelikan does not

good to know .. hmm now that you mentioned I may pick up a dip instead .. in one of the antique store there was a full glass with nibs and about dozen handles for them .. from simple wood to some fancy carved ones .. some were really dirt cheap as well. So I guess that would be a safer approach.

So true, my flex dip nibs require more concentration to NOT flex than to flex them. My problem is that when I'm not trying to flex the nib...I'm pushing and it bites the paper pretty badly. Vercin...I'd definitely try a dip pen and flex nib if you're wanting to try a flex nib, they're fun and inexpensive.....at first, lol

Yes I would like to try .. It looks awesome the way it gets two tones ..

well locally I only have one antique shop that has them .. there was one extra fancy one, really detailed carving on it as well on bone I would guess .. but there was several same like this one:

wood green/black. Btw the nib like that on the picture is alright? or it needs to have a clip over it (for the ink)? or they are two different types .. like this one and with a clip?

Nibs come with or without the reservoir attachment, I have both, and both work just fine. The "clip" is just an additional reservoir to hold more ink, that's all. Also, you can buy extra nibs and nib holders from many shops online. www.paperinkarts.com is who get's my cash. Great site and service ;-)
