What's new

Newbie incoming!

Hello, everyone!

I'd like to introduce myself to you fine folks. I'm 27 years old, soon to be happily married come December, and very excited to be here. After several weeks of getting bombarded with ads for supply and leaf razors, I decided to do some research and realized - I would much prefer a traditional DE Safety Razor to either of those newer alternatives (no hate intended)! I've never really enjoyed cartridge shaving, and am excited to be able to dial in a comfortable and efficient shave once the stars align with technique, hardware, and software. I love a good hobby where I get to experiment around and find a good fit.

I must have spent about two weeks combing through youtube videos, these forums, and several others on reddit to get a good idea of where to start. I finally bit the bullet and grabbed a cheap Baili 171 with some Astra SPs for a trial run. Just a few shaves in, and I'm never going back to cartridges. It already resulted in a much less irritating shave, and so far I've even managed to escape nick and cut free! After using it for a couple days, I also found a fairly good condition late 1940s super speed for around $20, and that should come in soon. I imagine I'll stick to using those for a while, testing out different blades and nailing down my technique. I'd love to build a little collection of razors to find what's best, but I shouldn't keep too many at a time or it'll get hard to justify to the soon-to-be-missus. My facial and neck hair grows evenly pretty much everywhere except my cheeks (quirky genes, I guess), and I need to shave every 1-2 days, no more than 3, especially my neck and goatee zone. From my limited experience and knowledge I've absorbed from my brief but intense lurking, I'd wager a Rockwell 3 plate would do really well, but I'd like to try a few other things before taking that path of least resistance (while I imagine I'll eventually grab one, I'm hesitant due to what I've read about the larger razor head).

My question now for you all, is where should I be prepared to go from here? Are there any must-tries for a beginner to help deduce my preferences? Which razors would you recommend looking at when it's time to upgrade? What soaps and post-shaves should be on my radar? Thank you in advance, and I'm looking forward to shaving with you!

IMO,
Leave pre-shave oils out.
Buy a few Aritsen soaps like Declaration Grooming and Chiseled Face and Castle Forbes.
Pick up an adjustable razor or one that has multiple base plates so you can find what works for you.
Buy a sampler of blades so you can try out different blades as everyone is different. But be sure to buy Nacet blades to try first.

Welcome to the group. Everyone is different and if your new wife is going to get upset if you have lots of shaving gear, remind her about how many shoes or purses she has. Or how much make-up she owns. Fair is fair.
I only have 300+ razors and that's not too much. So you will be fine.

Sounds like you’re off to a great start, and I’m sure you’ll get plenty of helpful advice here. The most important thing to say is, enjoy the journey! Your technique, preferences, and gear will change over time and evolve with you. Just like everything else in life. Just enjoy the process to the best of your ability. I would say also that you don’t need to spend a lot of money, but that can be fun sometimes too 😁. As far as razor recommendations go, it will be different for everyone, but personally if I went back to the beginning and had to choose one razor…for the price, I couldn’t do much better than my Game Changer.
Enjoy!! 🖖🏼

Welcome aboard! I would probably stick with the razors you have for now until you are more comfortable. Do you have a shave brush yet? As far as soaps go, I would start with Stirling—good value and nice selection.

Welcome to B&B!
Some good advice here already, such as sticking with what you have for the present.
But as far as soaps, I'd recommend trying some good less expensive soaps, such as Proraso or Cella.

Arko of course is a must. Just ask @Mike M .

And welcome! As @Hms123 said, this really is a fine place. Lots of true friends reside here.

And congratulations on your soon to be marriage! It has the potential to be the best decision you will ever make. If you can keep her laughing that is. That one quality has saved my life and my marriage more than I count. She is to be your helpmate, if you aren't too stupid to listen to her.

One piece of advice: tell her you love her and show it, often!

FWIW, my first 2 safety razors were a Super Speed + a Vikings Blade Chieftain Jr. Both fine razors, but the question I have for you is: what colour is the tip of your Super Speed? Blue is a mild shave, excellent for a first timer. Red tip is the most aggressive- that is, simply put, closest- shave. This may result in a closer shave, but is also more likely to cut you. And both Silver or Black tip razors are in between in terms of how aggressive they are.

And a related question: what kind of blades do you use? If you're not sure, buy a variety pack, test them all, then get a larger pack- 50 or 100 count- of the type you like the most. Feather and Persona Med Prep are like the Super Speed Red Tip- they'll give you the closest, but also cut you the most if you're not careful. Personally, the first big pack I got was Wilkinson Sword, since I found that they gave a close-enough shave w/o making me an involuntary blood donor.

What pre-shave and shaving cream have you tried? You'll see a lot of mentions of Proraso, + for good reason. Their products are top notch. If you're a newbie- no shame in that, we all were at first!- I might suggest using their sensitive skin line. But their standard, green cap pre-shave + shave cream have a wonder, invigourating smell.

Finally, as for aftershave, that's another very personal preference. Myself, among easily available products, I like Duke Cannon Ice Cold after shave balm for when my skin is especially sensitive, and Captain's Choice Bay Rum for when it isn't. My wife, though, doesn't like how the latter smells!

Given how many products are out there, and how long men have been shaving like this, it's easy to get lost in all the choices. I say, go for it, have a blast!
