What's new

Newbie checking...

Hi Guys,

I have a beard but have been shaving my neck and tidying up lines with an electric razor for the last 10-ish years. A couple of years ago a new barbers opened locally specialising in beard grooming and traditional wet shaves. So I have been treating myself to a beard trim and straight razor shave every now and then, and have decided to learn the techniques myself.

I've decided to begin with a DE Razor and have just ordered a 1971 Gillette long handle Super adjustable.

However, while its being shipped from the US (I'm based in UK) I've placed a subscription with these guys - The Personal Barber UK Shaving Subscription - https://thepersonalbarber.com/ which arrived today! It includes their own DE Razor starter kit and products.

Can't wait to get started!

Welcome aboard! The Gilette Adjustable will suit you well

I'm hoping so. Plan is to start on a low setting and work my way up. I've a fairly thick beard but from the reading I've done this appears to be the way to start out.

Welcome.

Welcome to the forum from Australia. Thanks for checking in with us. The Gillette Super adjustable is a fantastic razor, enjoy it when it arrives.

Welcome to the forum from Ohio! You made a good choice in the Super Adjustable 109. It’s a fantastic razor and you can try all the settings to find what works best for you.

Welcome welcome. Go make another stop at the barber and pay attention to the feel of the blade. I think this is really helpful as you learn the angles and the pressure to get a close smooth shave.

Welcome to B&B.
The Personal Barber kit looks very expensive for what is being provided.

I don’t really have a gauge as I’m a newbie but thought the first first box in particular was good value at £25 -

I’ve signed up for the less frequent option as I won’t be shaving everyday.

I tried it out last night with the Shark blades and it was quite an experience. Where my technique was good the shave was really smooth and irritation free, but being consistent with that across my neck is another thing! I think I’m going to enjoy the learning process.

Good idea. They also have a bartender making a great selection of free cocktails so there’s a few reasons to keep going!
