Shwmai! I an new 2 all this! I had my 1,st shave this morning, using a recently bought MERKU safety razor. Despite following one of the on-line tutorials2 the letter, it was an unmitigated disaster! I have ended up with shavers rash on my neck! It wasn,t a very good experience, but 4 a newby, I don't think I,v done a bad job! But I will persevere and keep you up 2 date with my trials,and trepidations! Hwylxxx,

Maybe you followed the wrong tutorial? I like Mantic's stuff (http://www.youtube.com/user/mantic59). Also take a look at http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/index.php/Getting_started_wetshaving

Keep practicing. You may be using more pressure than you think. Pay attention to blade angle, and don't skimp on prep.

You have most certainly chosen the wrong razor.

Get yourself the basic razor like the Blue Tip and move your way up.

You will ultimately find the right razor to suit your skin

If any tutorial says that your first pass should be north-south, don't listen. Your beard grain might not run north-south. Figure out how the grain runs and shave with it.
