What's new

Newb to the Forum

Hello, new face to the forum and I guess you would say semi-new to wet shaving in that I got into it for a while and then went back to cartridge shaving and cans of aerosol type shaving creams. I have my one and only DE Safety Razor that is a Gillette Fat Boy I got from an antique shop here in town and sterilized. Thus far I've only used feather blades in it and I am partial to Barrister and Mann or Sterling soap, which are also two of maybe 5-6 I have tried.

I am interested in advice on potential razors to try out and blade combos. I've been eyeing the blackbird razors, but would be very interested to see if anyone has any experience with how they would compare to the fat boy I use now.

Thanks!

Welcome to B & B! Since you have a Fatboy, I suggest trying some other vintage Gillette razors. And the great news is most of the time they don't cost much. Check the B & B BST, be patient & you can find them at reasonable prices. Some I enjoy:

'48 - '50 Aristocrat
Aristocrat Jr.
Rocket
NEW Short Comb (SC)
NEW Long Comb (LC)
Fat Handle Tech
Raised Flat Bottom (RFB)

And those are just for starters. As far as modern razors, some of my favorites are:
Timeless .95 Titanium SB
Blackbird Titanium SB

This is a fun hobby, enjoy exploring & trying different razors.

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you've made a great start already!

The Fatboy is a classic, you could explore that more by trying different blades - have you checked out the Blade Exchange? Running a few different blades through that would be fun and help start narrowing down your blade preferences.

I think checking out the vintage razors dmshaver suggested is a perfect place to start. If you are interested in modern razors (the blackbird is nice) you might consider the affordable and well reviewed Razorock offerings like the Lupo or the GameChanger.

Welcome! The Fat Boy is generally regarded as a very good razor so you may find yourself comparing other razors to it. I’d suggest getting a blade sampler and trying different blade and gap combos.

I have a Fat Boy and my preferred blade with it is the Gillette 7 o’clock yellow. I also prefer my razor on a milder setting (like 4).

You already own one of the finest razors ever made. Perfect your technique and enjoy it. If you crave variety there are many vintage Gillettes and Schick injectors that will satisfy you. Stay away from “modern” razors that mimic the time-tested classics. Why have a copy when you can own and enjoy the original for much less money ?

Any of you guys that are familiar with both the blackbird and the fat boy able to tell me around what setting on the FB would give me a similar feel as far as aggression goes? I keep reading on the forum that the blackbird is an efficient/aggressive razor, so just trying to get in mind for what exactly this would be similar to. I know my neck area is always a trouble spot for me. I'm also a head shaver, so I'm clearing a lot of real estate when I go to work.

I've also been using the 4 setting for the most part since jumping back in with the DE razor.

Welcome! Yes, as has been said above, the Gillette Fat Boy is enough of a razor for any one person. But if you crave variety there's a lot of inexpensive options out there. One I really like is the vintage Star 100. They are plentiful and inexpensive and an outstanding razor.

The Terms of Service for the BST states you need to be a member 45 days & have 50 posts before you can comment on a BST thread. BUT... if you can get to 10 posts, you can send a member a PM. You could send a seller who has a BST ad a PM expressing your interest. And that is actually the preferred way to communicate on a BST ad, using PM's instead of posting on the actual BST thread.

Feel free to ask me a question if I didn't explain that well.
