Newb Question: Does a “Shave” Equal a “Pass”?

I’m diving into DE safety razor shaving and I have a question. I’ve heard blades are good for 4-6 shaves. Is that 4-6 “passes” or 4-6 shaving sessions with 1-3 passes?

I’ve heard blades are good for 4-6 shaves.

I used to believe that, believed if I nicked myself, the blade was done.

Now I believe that shave preparation and improved technique have a direct correlation to blade longevity. I now average 12 to 14 shaves a blade, but have gone 30 shaves several times.

Welcome aboard!

A ‘shave’ is the entire process, which may entail 1, 2 or 5 passes.

Be sure to check out the Excalibur Club; some of those guys get 100+ shaves/blade!!

A "pass" to me would be the allover application of lather, followed by shaving until that lather is gone.
Apply more lather and then shave for a 2nd pass, typically in a different direction.
Continue with additional passes until you're happy with the "shave".
If I have to go over some difficult spots again, I'd call that a "half-pass".

Most of my shaves are two and a half passes - WTG, ATG, then touch-up ATG blade-buffing.
