New Vintage Gillette

I've managed to obtain a second vintage Gillette. This is a 1976 Super Adjustable Black Beauty. Any sage advice as to what to expect?

The Super Adjustable is my favorite Gillette adjustable. I would say you can expect a great shave. Did you get the long or short handled Super?

I have the long handled version & it's a beautiful razor - milder than my '63 slim but the long handle gives great balance.

Long handle. What advice would you give as to what number to put it on for the first shave? I believe the numbers go form 1 to 9. Would a 3 be a good setting to start out? A 4?

The razor came in today! It is a 1976 Super Adjustable Black Beauty. Here are some pics I took. It appears to be in great shape.

In the last pic I have my razors. They are from left to right, Merkur 37C Slant Bar, Merkur 47C, Edwin Jagger DE-89L, Merkur 1904 Closed Comb, Gillette 1946-47 Aristocrat, and the new Super Adjustable. I've only been traditional shaving since July of 2013 so I guess I've been hit by RAD pretty bad! :scared:

Nice looking collection you have there! How does that Merkur 37C Slant Bar shave like? Is it mild or aggressive?

I love that slant bar. I would rate it as "efficient" if that makes sense. It cuts whiskers like nobody's business. If your technique is where it should be then you will have no worries. If you were to handle it like a cartridge razor you would need a styptic pencil and fast!!!

I couldn't wait to post this. Just got through shaving this morning and I have to say that you guys who said to expect a great shave weren't kidding. I loaded up a Gillette 7:00 yellow pack and set the razor on #4. Man oh man what a nice shave. Between this and the slant bar the whiskers on my face may never see the light of day again!!

Depends on the blade & you, but I usually use a 5 with Astras, Blue Labs & Feathers. Great razor --- you will really enjoy it. Remember: loosen the cap before changing settings and give an extra ¼ turn to lock the blade before shaving. Also, leave the cap sightly loose when not in use.

Go to the store and buy some Testors black enamel model paint and a fine brush. The numbers are recessed so this is easy. Paint one number at a time and wipe the excess as you go. The paint will remain in the numbering.

Also, don't be surprised if the last quarter turn stops working. This is due to the dissimilar metal Gillette used on this razor. Use a drop of very light oil periodically in between the space of the knob and handle and work the knob several times. You shouldn't have any issues.

What do you use?

I use the tape and enamel paint method. Some use nail polish. Specifically I use a bottle of black gloss touch up paint that came with my Snap-On toolbox. I scrape the old paint out with the point of a toothpick.

I use either the brush in the touch up bottle or a toothpick to cover one number at a time with paint. Grab a piece of scotch tape and stick it down over the number and pull off. Repeat with a new piece of tape until there is no more paint anywhere except in the number recess. Works really well for me.

I'd avoid using a qtip to wipe anything off as there's a chance you'll get fibers in the paint.

Thank you for the advice on painting the numbers AND the oil for the quarter turn. Great stuff!

Thanks.
