I got one for my son and one for me, but I thought they needed some custom trims. I got out the electric clippers and this is what I ended up with. I am using the shorter loft one and I like the exfoliating it does. They both lather pretty well also. I think this will be a good starter brush for my son for now, until I can get him a better brush.

I wanted a more "scritchy brush." Trying to free some ingrowns. The longer loft brush is for my son and he has not complained about it being to rough. It should get softer the more he uses it, right?

It was my understanding that trimmed boar hair won't split like untrimmed, so a trimmed brush won't soften like an untrimmed.
Heck, it might soften some anyway...and aren't VDH brushes already trimmed?
I, too, like a brush with some backbone and scritch, and since these are the marks of cheaper brushes, in this one aspect my shaving budget gets a break.
