New to the de world! Which sampler?

I just recently purchased a Edwin Jaggar 89. I know I'm looking for a razor sampler pack considering I don't know which razors would fit me the best. Can anyone suggest a sampler pack preferably one from Amazon cause I have to place a order for other house hold products as well as free shipping. Thank you

I sincerely believe that the standard advice to n00bs to purchase a sampler is misguided. At this stage it's all about technique and just starting out your technique will be highly variable. Some good days. Some awful. And they'll have nothing to do with what blade you're using. But if you happen to switch to Feathers or Astras or Sharks or whatever on one of those awful days, you're likely to conclude that those blades don't work for you.

Instead, I suggest buying a sleeve of 100 well-respected blades. Change the blade out every other shave. That'll be 6 months with the same type blade. By then your technique should have improved sufficiently so that the sampler will be useful.

This is very good advice. I'd suggest starting with Astra SPs.

I bought my first sampler pack on Amazon. Some good ones can be had but there will be some "filler" blades in any pre-assembled blade package. If I could go back, knowing what I know now, I would pick one blade and learn to shave with that. If I had to pick one blade for you, it would be the Astra SP. Smooth, more than sharp enough and works well in almost any razor. If I am having trouble shaving I know I can always throw in an Astra and figure out what else isn't working in my setup, because the Astra is consistently good.

I started out trying a new blade every few shaves when I first started out. I had some really good shaves but boy did I have some really bad shaves. After about a month or so, I settled on the Bic Chrome Platinum. I ordered 100 and put the sample pack away. That was the best thing I could have done. At that point, I had not joined this or any other forum, so I was not effected by wanting to try the latest hot thing. I shaved for a year on that one pack of blades and only one razor. I got to know that razor and that blade and got great shaves day in and day out.

So, what you do ultimately is up to you. I'll go look at some of the sample packs on Amazon and recommend one that, in my opinion, has the least amount of filler blades. I'll post it again in a minute. Best of luck, whatever you decide.

If I were ordering from Amazon, I believe this is the one I would pick:

Immediately put the Feather's up in the cupboard and don't try them until you have your technique down. They are so extremely sharp that, combined with imperfect technique and pressure, will result in a truly uncomfortable shave. You also may not like the Nacet Stainless, but you will have to decide. The rest of the blades are "generally" thought of as very decent, with the Gillette Silver Blue, Bic Chrome Platinum and Astra as 3 of my favorites. The GSB is my favorite out of those, but sharper than the other 2.

For me, I turned the corner on blades when I realized that most often, blades just labeled "Stainless" do not work for me. The type of blade that does work for me is Chrome Platinum, Platinum, or some combination. Essentially, modern blades with a coating, or multiple coatings seem to work best for me, while plain stainless seems rough on my skin. This is a personal assessment only. You will have to figure out what works best for you.

I always recommend a new DE shaver get a 100 count carton of Astra blades (they are around $9 delivered through amazon).

After they get half of the carton used (2-3 months) they should know how to shave by then and can start looking at different blades.

I have seen way too many new shavers grab a large "sampler package" and get awful shave after awful shave from each and every brand, blaming their problems on the razor blades and never leaning how to shave.

Pick one blade.
Prep your beard properly
Map your beard (so you know which way WTG, XTG, ATG is)
Stretch your skin while shaving
Use short rapid strokes and keep a consistent blade angle.

If you do all of the above you should be able to shave with any blade stuffed into any razor and get a perfect shave time after time.

++++++ I wish I had taken the time to really read around on the forum. Out of my sampler pack, I found that the Astra Superior Stainless shaved better than the other blades and I stuck with them for two months before finding other blades to try but I had a vintage gillette flare tip not one of those newly made pot metal razors. Note of caution though, every face is different and you will have to find out what works for YOUR face.

Rest in Peace
I suppose I'm in the minority but based on my own experience I wouldn't advocate blade sampler packs. I researched B&B and found that Astra SP and Feather have plenty of fans. I looked at sampler packs and all seemed to have brands that I would never use due to price, availabilty and ratings. So I have Feathers and Astra SP's; it keeps things simple for me. Maybe later I'll try others, but it will be one brand at a time.

Do NOT start with Feathers. I shudder thinking of the blood loss that would result...

Starting with 100 is good advice. I'd say Gillette Silver Blue, Gillette 7 O Clock Yellow, or Astra would be fine. The Astras are the cheapest of that group. I don't care for them personally but they are good.
