What's new

New to forum and just purchased a Bull Mastiff from BRW

Update: Razor was delivered today: Fine bit of machining and workmanship. Tried it out with a Personna blade and my God it was great. The only thing I might regret is not going for a longer handle.

I snapped a photo for posterity. See below:

HI,

New to the forum, but have read through quite a few threads and decided to purchase a Bull Mastiff w/ the NEW head from Bob's Razor Works.

I should have it shortly and I'm looking quite forward to it. This will be my first DE razor. I understand Feather blades are quite popular. Could anyone recommend a place to purchase?

This forum is a wonderful wealth of info. Many thanks. I think I may even attempt a straight razor at some point.

Thanks,
John

Welcome to B&B!

Before you settle on Feathers (or any other blade) I would recommend getting a sampler pack and giving several brands a try.

Enjoy the shaves.

+1 on this blades are a personal choice. You need to try several different blades till you find one that works for you. I use Sharks and Derby blades others can't stand them. The Feather blade is one that is on the edge of this love or hate debate.

Since nobody else has, I'll point you to WestCoastShaving.com, BullGooseShaving.net, or VintageBladesLLC.com - the DE sampler packs are just what the doctor ordered. Feathers are excellent, but unforgiving blades. I'm of two minds as to whether they ought to be the first blade for a newb. On your first DE shave, you're going to probably

1. Use too much pressure
2. Use a less than ideal blade angle
3. Go over the same spot several times in several directions, chasing stubborn whiskers
4. Probably do it all with mediocre lather

Feathers are so sharp, they cut hair before they even come in contact. Not really. I'm exaggerating. But they're super sharp, so they'll slice your whiskers even if you're doing it wrong. On the other hand, they don't discriminate between whisker and face. So, learning with Feathers will give you loud and clear feedback, but perhaps a bit too much right at the very beginning. Iridium Supers or Red-Pack Personna's might be a nice compromise.

PS, that's a really nice Razor for starting out with DE shaving. What other kit have you ordered? Got a nice brush? That's just as important as the razor, IMHO... the three sites I linked above have excellent brushes at great prices.

My experience with WestCoastShaving have been great. They are also a great source for sample packs. I personally love the Feather blades and have used them with the combination from Bob you have coming. However, everybody has different tastes so a sample pack would be a good move and fun as well. Enjoy your new razor - he makes great stuff!

Welcome John!
Looking forward to hearing about your first shave.

Who is that in your avatar?

Thank you all for your perspective! It is much appreciated.

I have been a blade shaver forever, but only the disposable variety. I wanted something nicer and cheaper in the long run. The relax factor is also driving my decision to kick it old school.

Any recommendations on medium priced brushes and soaps?

And yes my avatar is Sydney Greenstreet, the infamous 'Fat Man'.

I love those old movies. In Across the Pacific, Bogie got to say to Sydney, "But, mine's bigger.".

I'm currently using a brush I bought at a CVS drugstore for about $8 USD. My soap is Van Der Hagen (VDH) from that famous big box store. You gotta start somewhere. If you start at the top, what perspective do you have?

Welcome, and enjoy that BullMastiff. I have one as well. Just used it with the new-style head.....excellent. But if you really want to fall in love with it, fit a GEM or Ever-Ready 1912 head to it.......perfection!

Tracy
