New to Bow Ties

Picked up my first few bow ties today. I'm watching some YouTube vids to help teach myself how to properly tie. Many thanks to Strop for giving me some helpful advice.

Certainly not perfect for my first time, but I'm working on it.

Any tips and tricks are GREATLY appreciated! Thanks.

only piece of advice is buy quality. The better quality material makes a better bow. I was practicing with some throw away tuxedo tie back in the day. It was flimsy silk, and wouldnt hold a shape. When I started buying ties from Beau Ties Ltd, I immediately knew what was wrong with my technique.

As far as your picture, You did a great job :)

Thanks Isaac. The few that I bought are probably pretty low end. One is a Tommy Hilfiger, one is a UBC, and the others are Countess Mara.

Once I get my technique down, then I can upgrade.

more money doesnt mean better quality btw. I know brooks brothers usually has sales on their ties. just make sure they are a good material that will stand up so to speak.

One of the ties I bought (UBC) is definitely nicer quality than the others. That said, it is also thicker (not wider). It is bulkier. It is the only one that I have not yet been able to tie!

Those are some of the better ones to make great knots with. Daniel Cremiux at most dept stores is a nice tie as well. Carrot and Gibbs is another good one, but I like their thicker material. YOu can email the company and ask them specifically for the thicker material ties.

Either way, welcome to the family :)

My BeauTiesLtd.com tie. They make the a great tie. I have a couple Brooks (inherited from my grandad), but they are expensive -- $45 to $65. BeauTies run from $30 to $50 (Bill's private stock is more), but they have a better adjustment than Brooks. And they have a better catalogue than what you find online from Brooks.

Rob, I posted other comments in the Brown Leaf. Didn't see that you had posted here.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like I will definitely have to checkout BeauTies. I definitely like to support local New England businesses.

Hmmmm. I may just need to order this "Mustache" design from OoOTie.com

Where did you see the "Blizzard Sale" code?

Don't forget to never make it too perfect. If you do, everyone assumes it's a clip-on.

I had to untie and retie mine half-a-dozen times last night to prove I could..... (And mine was nowhere near perfect - particularly as the evening went on*...)

*Photo in 'Scottish Attire' thread, but not a very good one...

Great job- I love the look. Maybe shortening the overall length will get those back two even with the front two. My most useful instruction, which finally made the technique all sink in, is at The Black Tie Guide (see practice video in right margin). Great site in all respects, love reading it!

Gotta recommend The Tie Bar. I have no financial tie with the business. Bows, neckties, cufflinks, pocket squares. Ordered severeal times and always been very happy with the service and product. Great prices too! Recommend their _woven_ silk ties. Beautiful hand.

Cheers.

Once you get your technique down, work on keeping that top shirt button concealed. I think there is too much collar visible above the knot in the first photo. Knot looks good, though.

Good observation. Tying the first part of the bow tighter should fix that.

Now half as wise
Agreed. The knot looks good, but try to keep the button concealed. IsaacRN is spot on. The thicker material ties hold the'r shape better. They're a little more difficult to tie at first, but after they are worn once it gets easier. I only have one Carrot & Gibbs tie, but I've almost worn it out because I like it so much.

Thanks so much for all of the feedback. Below is a shot from day 2. I am tryin to mix patterns and complimentary colors, but that is all very new for me.

I will work to get the initial pass "tighter" to help conceal the top button. It was slightly better today, but still needs work.

Question regarding length. On the adjustable bow ties, should I set the length to be the same as my dress shirt neck measurement?

Here's today. Snow is coming down!!
