What's new

New Starbucks Mugs

Walking through San Jose airport last night i passed a Starbucks and could not help but notice new mugs that would be ideal for shaving with larger brushes. They were not very tall and big enough around to easily whip up the goods.

There seems to be three colors. There is a fourth one that is different but still a good size. It is white and has what looks like fish scales on the outside.

I found a link, but I must warn you the colors are MUCH better in person.

Oh, good. SWMBO put whipped cream in my coffee...

Wait a minute...

This whipped cream tastes like Arko!

All joking aside, they look to be about the same size as an Old Spice Blue mug, and in person the colors are much better than what shows up in the links. They are a good size and shape, the price is right, and they look good. I really don't need another mug, but I'm considering getting one. I'm not a coffee person and don't particularly want to advertise Starbucks, otherwise I would already have one on my shaving mug shelf. It is about perfect for one of my beasts.

I saw the white "scales" mug at the Starbucks in our Target store and was immediately drawn to it, thinking it would be great for shaving.

Funny...I had never thought of this! I had started collecting the old style from different cities around the country and in Europe when traveling, but the shape/size of the new ones do lend themselves to a decent shave mug. I'll have to take a closer look next time I am there. Has anyone actually used them for this?

I saw the same size mug today while visiting the Ronald Reagan Library. The Lincoln Exhibit is nearing the end of its run, and I'm going to be vacationing soon, touring Lincoln sites in Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois.

The person helping said that they were new, and of a different size than they carried before. I later checked the web site and they are not shown there yet.

Anyway, I bought one, a beautiful red one, with Presidential style seal reading "The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library". I have already melted the Col Conk Almond Soap I had in another mug and poured it into this one in preparation for shaving with it tomorrow morning.

The pictures don't do it justice. It is pictured with two brushes that will benefit from this large of a mug, a WD 30 Silvertip and a very full Lijun 24 Silvertip. Also pictured with it is a WD 20 Black Badger which will likely work with it, showing the versatility of the mug. I'll soon have an even larger brush that will love this mug, a 30 by 83 that I'll set in a WD 30 mm handle with a finished loft of 70 mm. The knot is coming from China on what seems to be a very slow boat.

It is also pictured with two other mugs for perspective. An Old Spice and a Franklin Barbershop Luxury.

The Reagan Mug measure slightly under 3 1/2" at the mouth (has a very slight taper), and 3" in height. The Old Spice measures very slightly over 3" at the mouth and 2 1/2" in height.

A 3" puck is loose in the bottom of the new mug, but would respond well to melting and pouring in. Since the seal includes some gold leaf, it would be best not to put the mug in the microwave.

The Starbucks mugs were priced at $8.95, and the Ronald Reagan mug was $12.95.

From all appearances, it is everything I expected, and the Starbucks mugs should be the same.

I shaved with it this morning using my WD 30 Silvertip and Col Conk Almond Soap. The mug is just the right size and worked wonderfully. Passing a red Dodge Charger in a parking lot today, I realized that the red of this mug is fire engine red. The Dodge was a Fire Captain's car, and it was fire engine red.

There seems to be a new generation of coffee mugs. 14 oz, somewhat short. It definitely has its place, especially if you like large brushes.

I'm sure there are others besides the ones I found in the library and at Starbucks. Try one, you'll like it.

I was at the original Starbucks at Pike Place Market over the weekend. I almost picked up their "signature" mug for shaving use, but bought another exclusive mug that had the original Starbucks naked mermaid logo instead... it's tall double-wall ceramic with a drip-gaurd lid, so it will probably only see use for actual coffee.

SWMBO collects these mugs, she must have 20+ from our travels. I tried using them once and whilst I enjoyed the results, I wouldn't dare risk incurring the wrath of my other half again.

I think I'll wait until Starbucks issues the mug featuring two crossed .45 ACP semi-autos.
It will probably be a while!

Today's vacation travels took me to the Lincoln Museum in Hodgenville, Kentucky where I found a mug I just had to have. It will look great on the shelf next to the Reagan Library mug.

It may not seem ideal, as it is clear glass except for the gold emblems. It also has a slight taper so the mouth is slightly smaller than the base of the bore. It is still a reasonable size and shape. I intend to use a clear soap in it, such as VDH Luxury Unscented. Please note the cast in embossed "United States America" on the bottom that can be read from the top or the side (photo from top). It is pictured with one of my travel brushes, as it is all I have with me. I intend to use the mug mostly with larger brushes.
