What's new

New Standard, Bostonian, etc.

What is the difference between the New Standard, New Improved, Bostonian, Richwood, etc.? Are the razors themselves the same and the difference is just the case and package it came in? I've seen a few lately and they look fantastic, and from the sounds of it, shave great as well. I'm thinking about picking one up and want to know exactly what I'm looking at and what I should be looking for. Thanks for any advice on these.

yep, basically the same razor; different cases. they are all new improved models with different platings (silver, gold) packaged in different cases. the new improved models with different handles than the typical diamond patterned handles were the new improved big fellow, the milady decolletee parisienne, and the deluxe combination. the tuckaway handle is a little shorter. the heads on these razors were all the new improved model head. the heads on the cavalier and deluxe was engraved.

I ran across this thread a few weeks ago. According to it there is a difference between the NEW Improved and NEW Standard heads. Have to read through the first 5-6 posts to get all the info.

I believe the information in that post is erroneous (I could be wrong).

The head he describes, with the flat base plate and no pins, is the New Deluxe, not a New Standard. I've had sets marked clearly as New Standard that had the regular New Improved head with the pins showing through the bottom of the base-plate.

To answer the OP's question: yes, they're the same razor with minor finish differences. You can also get a New Improved Tuckaway (non spindle type, with a shorter handle). I used to be convinced that the New Deluxe was the best of the Gillette OC heads until recently, when I became a New Improved convert.

I also find that the New Improved head gives the closest shave. But it it not one to take for granted. I can shave effortlessly with a Superspeed, but I had better be paying attention shaving with my Tuckaway.

You are absolutely correct. And the info in the original post is in error. In the old post there is no need to apologize for bringing up an old subject. There appears to still be confusion on what a New Standard is. New Standard is simply the name of a particular set like Bostonian and Richwood, all of the New Improved family.

I posted a link to this thread/discussion in that old one so hopefully everyone can follow the great points you are all making in this thread. Thanks Gentlemen, this is always good information.

(For those following along at home, the other thread mentioned can be found HERE. Some excellent additional clarification has been added.)

If I'm understanding this correctly if someone is selling a set as a Bostonian it doesn't really matter if the razor wasn't part of that set originally since it's the same razor. Although it could be from a different year, it's still pretty much the same razor, right?

As long as plating on the razor and the blade case match the box itself, there'd be no way to determine if the set was 'matching', apart from if the date codes made no sense.

The attraction of the Bostonian sets is the cool raising mechanism, anyway.

I am glad I linked to the old thread, that was the only one I could find "trying" to differentiate between the two and was taking the info to heart.

Those razors look awesome, I'm going to have to stop buying other razors so I can get one in month or two.

Yohann, I heartily agree. I too find the New Improved to be a much more comfortable, and yes superior, shaver to the New Deluxe. Of the Gillette 3 piece models, the New Standard/Bostonian etc... is my favorite.
