New Standard Blades

Does anyone know if a 1927/1928 New Standard was designed for the 3 hole blade (old style). I have heard about shimming older razors with modern DE blades, is this a model that needs that?

Yes, they were designed for the old 3 hole blades, but I see no reason to shim them personally. I shaved with my '28 New Standard yesterday with a modern Personna blade. I use my Old Types sans shim as well. Never had any trouble whatsoever.

I've never had a problem getting a razor designed for three hole blades to tightly hold modern thin ones. I have, though, used a shim between the blade and comb to increase blade gap and the razor's aggressiveness.

Agreed, same here.

Just go easy to start with until you become familiar with it's shave characteristics. It will be aggressive.

Wasn't the New Improved designed for both the new blades and old? As a way to allow folks to use up the old stock while the newer blades came into play?

New slotted blades didn't start full production until 1929. The 106 head of the New Improved was made from '21 through '28.
