What's new

New shaver, new (old) razors...

Hi y'all,

so, I'm getting ready to start straight-shaving, and I just picked up a pair of straight razors at the local antique shop; they're not exactly what I was hoping for, but at $15 for both together, I decided I'd give them a shot.

Anyway, both razors appear to be in a decent shape as far as my inexperienced eye can tell, but they could certainly use some cleanup and honing. Unfortunately, I just don't feel comfortable enough doing that by myself yet, so I was wondering if anyone could suggest a company or a forum member here I could contact for assistance in getting this done?

For reference, according to markings on razors & boxes:

Razor #1, which appears to be the better one to me:

"Starlight" made by "C. A. Johnson, New Haven, CT - Made in Germany"

Razor #2

made by Johnson & Co, Sheffield, England (Blade tang also has a Hammer & 7 stars mark).

I'll do my best to post the photos as soon as I can.

Barbash, Luc,

many thanks for astoundingly prompt responses - they're greatly appreciated. In retrospect, alas, it seems I've assumed but failed to actually type in a fairly important question - can anyone tell me if the razors I mentioned above are of make that'd make investments such as honing worth the money? I'd hate to ship the razors off, pay for honing, wait, then discover they're simply sub-par to begin with, honed or not?

Thanks!

A'ighty, this is the best I could pull off with the crappy camera / lighting I have here; Razor #1 only, for the moment:

That's the one that seems both keener and cleaner to me, so it's likely the one I' try to get honed first.

Thank you!

A honemeister would actually have a better opinion than me but I would say it looks fine. Small chips on the edge will reduce the size of the blade but the rest seems all right.

German and British blades are usually good.
