What's new

New Shavemac D01, or Simpson PJ2 2-Band?

I'm going to get a new brush. I am looking at the new ShaveMac D01; the PJ looking handle with the script looking business around the handle. And the Simpson PJ2 2-band hair. They are relatively the same price (the Simpson is about $15 more total). What do you guys think?

I would go with the Shavemac - make sure to email Bernd and ask for a shortened loft & specify which knot shape you would like.
Which knot size would you choose? Here's what I would recommend for each setup:

Knot: 18mm
Loft: [Bulb:46mm / Fan:44mm]

Knot: 20mm
Loft: [Bulb:47mm / Fan:45mm]

Knot: 22mm
Loft: [Bulb:48mm / Fan:46mm]

Of course, all this is subjective based on how dense/scrubby you like your brushes.

Ok. 2 for shavemac, 1 for Simpson. I'm looking for more input.

I'll tell you why I'd go for the SImpsons.

It has a higher grade of hair. The two-band 'Finest', 'Whitecap' hair etc is rare and thus expensive, and sometimes goes out of production for long periods.

It looks nicer. Judgement call I guess.

Vulfix has excellent customer service.

Simpsons are just much more desirable brushes to me...I'm sure the members above own and enjoy Shavemacs, but Simpsons has pedigree and appeal that the other brush doesn't. Considering the price is similar, its a simple choice.

Simpsons are great brushes, but I've had two Two-band Simpsons brushes and to me, they seemed very inconsistent. I would actually recommend the standard Super over Two-band when it comes to the PJ2 & the T2.

If you want some really outstanding Two-band hair, I would recommend a Rooney in Finest. So incredibly unique in terms of softness and scrubbyness, it blows my Two-Band CH2 out of the water. (not saying I don't think my Two-Band CH2 is bad, I really love it - I just feel that my Rooney 3/1 in Finest epitomizes what Two-Band/Finest hair should feel like)

I recently had the same choice to make. I went with the PJ2 and now I have the buyers remorse. Its a great brush but not quite what I was hoping it would be. So I vote for Shavemac.

I vote for the Shavemac Silvertip D01. So much so that I ordered a custom D01 myself. :biggrin1:

But honestly, I don't think you could go wrong with either brush. :thumbup1:

Shavemac D01. I have one and want another!

I also have a Rooney 3/1 and a Simpsons Special. I like them all but I like the Shavemac a bit more than the others.

Can't comment on Simpson...don't have one yet. But, I do have a Shavemac D01 in 23mm and I REALLY like it a lot. Built well, not a shedder, and has good backbone--not as much as my Rooney Heritage Emillion but enough. I actually like the amount it has--just about right IMO. However, I doubt you could go wrong with either brush.
