New Scuttle Acquistion

I have recently acquired a scuttle on eBay.

The dimensions are 3 1/8" Diam, 4: high with a 2" water mouth.
No cracks no paint or decoration issues.
Under the ship the caption reads "William the Conqueror 1066."

I paid $10.99 plus $8.95 shipping, $19.94 total.

Since I do not have a large frame of reference on scuttles, was this a good deal, average deal, bad deal?

I reckon that's a damn good deal. It's in excellent condition and it's clean and it's pretty.

Just make sure that your brush can fit comfortably into the spout. That's where it's supposed to go for soaking before you lather up. Some say you can only use block-soap in these things...I say they're lying. I've wanted a shaving-scuttle for a long time. When I finally got one, the first thing I did was whip up a lather in the top chamber with shaving-soap to marvellous effect. So I use it as a combination brush-soaker & lathering-bowl.

Congratulations on your find. It's a real beauty :)

I paid $15 for my scuttle at the flea-market and it's in almost mint condition (no chips, cracks, paint/pattern loss etc), so I think you did well. The real test is - Will it help you produce awesome lather?

I'm an avowed scuttle-nut! I have four sitting around and just like looking at them as decorations. I use a DB almost everyday and enjoy it.

Your new scuttle is really good-looking and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine.

That is a great looking scuttle and one that you will treasure for some time. Several vendors make soap that fits the top of that type of scuttle if that is what you choose to do. One that comes to mind is Classic Shaving. Others here will tell you of other vendors as well.

Before I got my Robert Becker scuttle, I used the vintage design scuttle like yours for soaking my brush while showering. I then would refill it with hot water and lay my brush in the soap receiver to try to keep the lather warm between passes. It worked to some degree but not as good as a modern scuttle.

If you find that you do not enjoy the scuttle as a useful shaving implement, place it in a prominent place in your shave den and enjoy it as a beautiful vintage piece of shaving memorabilia.

I love shaving-scuttles because they are truly unique. You wouldn't use a scuttle for anything other than shaving. They're a curiosity and they're a wonderful bathroom accessory.

What is different about this one is that is commemorates William of Normandy's conquering of Britain in 1066 by crossing the channel. This was the last time the Britain was conquered by an invading force. Most nautical scuttles and mugs I have seen have specific ships, classes of ship, or floral arrangements. This caught my eye because of the commemoration factor.

The ebayer that was selling this call it a mug and really did not know the difference. The site had a lot of nice china and stoneware, but this was the one item that seemed out of place with the kitchen stuff.

I am glad it was a BIN or best offer and we struck a reasonable deal that satisfied both of us.

Whether it becomes an everyday item or stored on the shelf for view, I will enjoy this little scuttle.
