What's new

New Razor

So, thanks to holli4pirating, looks like I'm in the market for a new shaver.

I'm currently a beginner with a Dovo 5/8", and it seems I could have dulled the edge due to lack of experience on the strop. I'll be sending this razor back out to be honed by straight razor designs so I get a true edge...

That being said, what type of straight should I be getting next? Or should I be getting one at all?

I'm just concerned as I will be without my razor for approximately 2 weeks (Hawaii to Ohio and back). That means it's back to the electric razor... boooo...

Why thanks to me?

As far as recommended size and grind, it seems 5/8 to 6/8 and around half hollow is what is recommended to the new guys. The size makes it easier to watch the angles, and the grind won't flex so you are less likely to get bitten. A round point (or at least muted) will be less likely to nick you. Beyond that, pick whatever appeals to you and your wallet.

You helped me confirm my problem. Therefore thanks! Many thanks! =P

Thinking of picking up a 6/8 le grelot from another member on here. Recommended???

Legrelots are nice shavers, and I'm guessing you are talking about one of the quarter hollows with the thumb notch - never tried one but never heard a bad word said about them.

Le grelot, which means 'a small bell' in English, are hard to beat as shavers. Plus, they don't make them anymore: TI only had a limited number of blanks for production. Thus, like a choice real estate, if you don't like, you can always flip it!

I'm sure you've tried a wacker. Hmm. so many choices...
