New Razor Idea

I would like a razor with no safety bar. It could be a 3 piece, looking for some heft in a long handle. Not sure I can have one made as this is probably not the most popular idea.

Take a Gillette Tech, and use a hacksaw to saw off the safety bar (I cringe at the thought of destroying a wonderful Tech in such a way.).

The Rolls Razor, if I recall correctly, doesn't have much in the way of a safety bar.

I'm sure there are plenty of razors out there with bent or otherwise seriously disfigured safety bars, the destruction of which would not cause members to cringe.

I must not be very good at exspressing myself. I'd like one of these razors to be made. At least the head piece. If you saw off an exsisting one you will expose the brass and may have rough edges.

What you want is a Rolls Razor. The "safety bar" (it isn't, really...) is about an 1/8" away from the edge. It's shaving with a chunk of straight razor on a stick.

I was just thinking about this the other day.

So, you're wanting just bare blade protruding through the head of the razor, correct?

My caution would be too much flex on the blade. It could only be a tee tiny bit there. Perhaps more flex on the blade will help it?

By flex what I'm describing is since there's not bar or teeth underneath you will get the pressure from your skin and shave stroke on the blade, thus pushing it upwards.

I have a Gillette Tech like Rainman describes - except with the standard, short Tech handle.

Three-pieces, no safety bar, no teeth. I've always felt it looked to nicely-done to be a homemade "unsafe bar". It looks like it came off the press this way. Maybe it was meant to be thrown away, maybe it was a trial run of a new press, but it got out of the factory.

So, they do exist.

Ohhhhh! Now why didn't I think of that?

Just take a thin strip of inflexible metal, like one of those cheap little braces they sell to reinforce corners of cabinets and bookshelves made of particle board. Cut it to about the length of the razor head and get 3 holes drilled in it at the proper locations. It should hold the blade steady under the top of any old gillette 3 piece. No need to destroy anything.

What about a GEM Micromatic with the comb cut out and then smoothed down?
Heck, I just pick up a micomatic today for a buck. I'd be willing to do the surgery and smooth it down and send it to you. Then all you would need to do is have it replated. That should be much less than having one custom built.
The Micromatic also has a longer handle as well.

Thanks to all. Great ideas. I'll update if any progress.

Interesting thought John. The GEM is also a good candidate IMO because the blade is thicker/more rigid. Flex should not be an issue with that blade.

Isn't a safety razor with no safety bar essentially just a shavette?
