I recently started straight shaving with on of these.
It uses half of a DE blade. I'm sure many of you have at least seen them. Well I kept having the problem of getting nicks from the corners of the blades. I posted about this problem last week and a few people were kind enough to recommend trying a Shavette. I was talking with the friend that got me interested in straight shaving about saving for one(I'm a bit behind on bills right now, so extra spending is almost entirely out of the question). He told me that what he started out with was a hair shaping razor that was given to him by a barber friend of his. These can be obtained online or at your local Sally Beauty Supply for five or six dollars. It uses single edge injector-style blades. To use it for shaving you simply remove the comb/guard from over the blade (it slides right off).
So yesterday I had a little extra scratch after squaring away the bills due this week, so I stopped in at Sally and got a Marianna hair shaper razor and a box of ten Personna blades for about ten dollars, and gave it a shot with my usual wet-shave set up VDH brush and delux soap and home-made aloe gel/Old Spice aftershave.
I have to tell you, it was the best shave I've ever had. Got BBS after two passes and very little touch up. I only got one nick as well during left handed shaving of the right side and it closed up with cold water.
Now, I do plan on moving up to a regular straight when money gets straightened out. However, until then I'm quite happy with my new acquisition, and would recommend it to anyone who's interested in making the jump to straight shaving but is a little short on cash. If you're not short on cash, don't be a cheapskate, get the good stuff. lol
