What's new

new razer

i switched to DE shaving about 8 months ago and deceided on a merkur HD, various tobs creams and after going through a blade sample pack, derby extra blades the ones with the horizontal writing on them. so a few weeks ago i bought a pack of 100 derby's and they were awful and on first shave you can feel the blade pulling the hairs these new ones were the blades with vertical writing on them. I since bought a merkur futur a couple of weeks ago and tried these blades as well as merkurs and a couple of others and the shave was awful. I blamed this on the futur so was about to give up on it and stick it on the ebay and go back to my trusty HD.
So as a last resort i had a couple of feather blades which had been ok in the HD but nothing great. I put one in the futur set it to number 3 and "WOW" on first pass i had to check the blade was in because i could not feel it cutting the hairs at all. What a difference a blade makes, i have now used the same blade for the last 7 days and still no drag or pulling at all. I have never gotten 7 days from 1 blade before. Just shoes how some blades work better with different razers. still a bit p'd off about the derbys though, how can they let their standards drop so much.
Also the way you shave using the HD and the futur is totally different and you have to persevere with the futur but once you get used to its size and weight it is an excellent razer.

Lucky you had the back-up blade or you might have disposed of a perfectly good razor! Sorry to hear about your experience with the Derby blades (I still have quite a few of the horizontals) and I hope that you can find more blades to suit.
Good luck.

You might try the Red Personna blades. Similarly priced to Derby's, but for me they shave much better. Also, I couldn't only get three shaves out of a Derby, but I can get 6+ out of the Personnas.
Definitely try a variety of blades in a razor before you consider getting rid of it, or the blades for that matter.
Just this week I was giving Astra blades a try, and had awful shaves in every razor until finally I threw it in my Slim on setting 1, finally a smooth shave!
It's worth a little experimenting to find good razor/blade combos. :)

Glad you found some blade/razor combinations that works for you. I always liked a Derby blade in my Futur, but didn't care for Derby in my HD or 38C. It's nice to find that combo that gives a great shave.

just a quick one about the futur does the head move slightly by about 1mm when you twist it or is it solid. mine tends to move slightly so the blade is not totaly even right across the gaurd
