What's new

New pen!

I just received my latest: a Jinhao X750 with a medium nib. The pen is large and heavy, and the nib is a bit flexy, enough to give some line variation with a little pressure. After rinsing, I loaded it up with DC supershow blue, and am just playing around with it a little. The pen itself is a weird color. It is a black and dark red swirl, and it has metallic gold wash dropped on in spots, but you can see it unless you are in the right lighting.
I am impressed with the pen so far. The medium nib is bigger than I expected, and I think I may try it with a fine nib.

You can see some of the variation here.

All in all, a nice little pen, especially for the under $10 price tag.

If Im not mistaken Xfountainpens has nibs compatible with these pens you can buy just the nib to swap out with, good nibs too

I do have a couple of #5 nibs coming in with an order from FPR, and I might see if they will fit on the pen even though they recommend a #6. Otherwise, I'll have to put an order in to xfountainpens, too.

The Knox nibs from xfountainpens are really quite nice in an X750. I gave my girlfriend that pen in that color recently, and she likes it.

Glad to hear that. I'll be looking at another order before long, I suspect.

BTW, can anyone give me a general idea of the difference between a #4, #5 and a #6 size nib? I haven't found anything that explains that exactly. I am guessing it involves the diameter of the feed, but am not positive.

Diameter of the feed although those numbers don't apply to vintage nibs.

The order from FPR arrived last night. I got a pen for the wife, and a couple of nibs to play with. I put a medium nib in the wife's pen, and loaded it up with baystate cranberry (her ink of choice). It is a nice wet smooth writer, and she loves it. She's not into fountain pens, but so far she has a Serwex 1362, a Parker 21, a Sheaffer school pen, and an eyedroppered Preppy. Now she's wanting another pair of 1362s with medium nibs so she can have multiple colors going at the same time. Another order is placed...along with the pen of the day for me.

They also threw in a free pen that I immediately put red ink in and took to work for markups. It's a serwex 162, but it seems to write just fine, and will work great as a work pen. We'll see how it goes, but I may have to play with the nib a little. It has been trying to dry out on me fairly quickly, but I'll give it a day or 2 to see how things work out. I do have another nib that I can put in it if I need to.

I would hate to think of the order if she was into FPs.

Tell me about it. I still can't believe I let her have my 21. She tried to take my esterbrook, too, but that was a bit too far. It's kept her away from my better pens, though.

After using the serwex for the day, I'm taking it back home, and I'm going to change the econo nib that was in it with a better quality one. I just don't like the way it writes, and I think the improved nib will make a difference.

An update on both fronts. The serwex is out. Even with a new nib, it just dries out on me. It writes terrific, but if it doesn't get used for a day or 2, it dries out. It will have a new home eventually.

I ordered some nibs from Xfountainpens to swap out in the X750s that I have. The original nib, while smooth, is just a bit too wide and wet for my normal writing. So I ordered a Knox fine, and a 1.1 italic, (and a Bulow medium nib just to have something to play with).
