New Mergress

Mergress

First day: arrived in a nice box with no instructions. It is a thing of beauty. It’s heavy, but not ridiculously so. It feels good in my hand and I am filled with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. Since there are no instructions I assume I’m supposed to be clever enough to figure out such a simple device. A couple of minutes later I realize I’m to tighten the screw all the way down for the lightest setting. OK, so I’m not a mechanical genius.

I decide to start on the mildest setting and go up one notch a day until I do some serious damage. The weight feels great in my hand and I use a light touch. It has a wonderful “throat” – the sound of cutting whiskers. It feels as aggressive as my EJ 89L, but I’m only guessing here. The shave is wonderful and I’m wondering why I want to change the setting – ever.

Day 2 &3: up a click each day and only one weeper just below my lip. I am exceedingly pleased at how exceedingly pleased I am with this purchase. I am doing the usual three pass shave except no ATG on my upper lip. This sensitive area is, however, feeling very much like I did the ATG pass - without the pain and tugging. Excellent!

Day 4: setting 2 & 1/2. I have reached my limit for the same setting on all three passes. The first pass went fine, although the noise from the blade was quite frightening. This setting was too aggressive (for me) on the across the grain pass. One good weeper, but not as smooth a glide as the previous days. ATG was doable, but I can't say it was the highlight of my day. My upper lip is, interestingly enough, not the BBS I got with the milder settings.

I have reached the end of leaving the same setting for the day. I'm going to continue to climb the hill of aggressiveness until I reach my limit - but only on the first lather. I'm going back to 1 1/2 - 2 for the other two - where everything was good and I was a much happier camper.

Nice Review. The Mergress is a fine shavung instrument, plating isnt the best, but all an all its a nice perfectly Hefty Balanced Adjustable Razor. Thanks for sharing.

Sorry, I should have included the blade: Medical Prep. I also switched to the CF Lavender today - my favorite - but it didn't save me from the first sting when using the block.

I just used mine yesterday for the 5th time. I like a Red IP with the Mergress. WTG and XTG passes on 2.5, move it down to 1.5 for ATG. Very nice weight and engineered nicely.

Now I have a situation. Today was setting 3 for WTG and 2 for XTG and ATG and I can't imagine ever getting a better shave - so why would I want to explore more aggressive settings? I suspect curiosity will win out over common sense.

Yeah, the Mergress set on 1.5-2 range, I believe, and I'm sure somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, is as aggressive or slightly more so than the 89.
