New member, branching out

Hey, forum at large!

I’ve been wet shaving with a Merkur DE for roughly 10 years, but came to that after a really janky vintage butterfly handle I inherited from grandad.

The Merkur 42C has been my only razor experience thus far, but I’ve cycled blades and soaps and balms around. Am running low on my go-to Personna blades and realized I should try out other handles and heads. So here I am, seeking The Mysteries.

I clean up cheekbones and neck once a week, and have a fulltime thick, dark beard that’s pretty coarse. Realizing that maybe the Merkur is too mild for that kinda thing, and it would explain the irritation I get because I’ve gotta go over my neck too many times. Took me 11 years to realize this… lol. But even slow learners learn eventually!

Just ordered a Henson aggressive and am considering a Yates 921-M but that’s a lot to drop at once, so we’ll see.

Welcome to the forum, we're glad you're here. I hope the new razor does the job for you, but I suggest you get a sizeable pile of different blades to try - much cheaper than a pile of razors. It sounds like you need to be on the sharper end of the offerings, although that may change with a more aggressive razor. You may want to make sure that you're not using too much pressure. The best way to get irritation is by using the wrong razor angle and applying too much pressure. My opinion is that the need to go over the same spot repeatedly is caused by either the wrong razor/blade angle or the wrong equipment. If it didn't work well the first time it won't work well the second or third (if you do what you did you'll get what you got). Good luck with your search.

Welcome to the B&B community from Gainesville, Florida.

Our youngest son trims his cheek line and neck. He started out with the Merkur 38C but has been enjoying the Merkur Progress XL I got him...now upgraded to the Mergress XL I gifted him... He also uses a barber razor. He has both an AC barber razor and one that uses half DE blades. He prefers the shorter length of the half DE blades.
