New Ink Purchases for Local Store

Yesterday I bought:

Noodler's Bad Blue Heron

Diamine Delamere Green

Pelikan Violet

I also ordered:

Lamy Blue/Black

Was thinking of getting some kind of burgundy ink. I wanted to try Private Reserve, but I read some stuff about many bottles of the stuff turning to sediment so I put it back on the shelf. Anyone have opinions on this ink? My local store has Black Cherry and Burgundy Mist which both seemed nice.

I also wanted a burgundy that was waterproof. Any good suggestions?

I love Lamy Blue/Black. I think you'll be pleased with the color.

For burgundy, i really like Black Swan in Australian Roses

I deal almost exclusively with Noodler's inks though.

Fridays are Fishtastic!
All are good inks, but Lamy has the best bottles in the business, IMO. They have built in ink wells.

I have private reserve black cherry and have not had an issue with it at all. I actually had it in my 2011 B&B LE Glenmont not too long ago, and it looked great with the 1 mm stub nib!

I was out yesterday and happened to stop into the local Staples office supply store and saw one lone bottle of ink in their inventory, so I purchased it... more to make sure the ink knew that it was wanted and not abandoned. It was a bottle of Parker Quink black. I loaded my only pen with it, and it is not bad ink to my inexperienced eye and hand.

Yes, I like the bottle based on my experience with Lamy Blue, which I put in my Al-Star and some Camlin pens. I originally avoided the Blue/Black because I prefer the appearance of straight blue by I wanted the Blue/Black for the water resistance it has over the regular blue, and figured it was a "safer" ink to put in my Lamy 2000 over the Noodlers.

So far I've used the Noodler's BBH and it seems to work pretty well in my Waterman Phileas. The flow is a bit drier than the Diamine and Waterman inks I've used in the pen, and is not as attractive on paper as the Diamine Sapphire Blue I had in it just previously. It also has a "chemically" smell to it. However, the waterproof properties really work and I didn't have any flow issues when I wrote about 4-5 pages with it the other day.

Does Noodler's make an ink in a burgundy or deep red color that behaves similarly (fast dry, no flow issues) that is also waterproof? My local store has a 1oz bottle of Noodler's Fox on the shelf but I wasn't sure about that one. I figured it might look too much like a straight red for what I'm looking for.

You might give this table on the Goulet's website a look. It lists the properties of all (?) the Noodler's inks. Their ink swabs are very helpful too. I'm not associated with them except as a customer. Just sharing what I think is a great source of info.

Trying to pick ink colors online or through recommendations is always a bit of a crapshoot, IMHO. I went into Santa Fe pens awhile back and told Neal I was looking for a good blue-black and he steerde me to a Noodler's Midnight Blue. Though I like it and use it, it isn't exactly what I was looking for. At Dromgoole's in Houston, they will dip test any ink on a card for you to look at in "real life".

Here are some Noodler's color samples:

You can at least use online samples like this one (Goulet's has a HUGE SELECTION of online samples) to compare one to the other, but the exact color you see on a piece of paper may not match what you see on the screen(avriation sin camera and monitor settings).

For example, the Fox looks pretty orange compared to the Burgundy.

Fox is red.

You could try samples of various Noodler's inks from the Goulets ... an inexpensive way to try them without getting a whole bottle of each.

Of the one's I've tried ... North African Violet is a great-performing ink, but not waterproof. La Reine Mauve is a great colour and waterproof, but I find it dries in the nib too quickly so doesn't flow well. Kung Te-cheng is waterproof, flows well and dries quickly, but is a blue sort of purple, so not the colour you like (but a great ink and worth a sample.)

Ordered the la reine as it was all I saw that looked like it fit the bill. Will report back how it does.
