What's new

New handle for my razor.

I have a Merkur 180 which I just love to death. I now realize that this is my razor of choice so after mch experimentation with old, new and a slant I would like to spice the 180 up. My only dislike is the long handle which to me is a bit light. I wanted to buy a UFO handle but the one I want is not available and the ordering/ site is confusing. Can anyone recommend a fat heavy handle made here in the USA and the site where I can purchase.

Thanks for the info I will check it out. Does anyone know the weight of the Merkur 180 handle? I have been all over Google looking for specs but cannot find anything. @Demaskee did the package arrive safely? Does anyone here have this handle

iKon Bulldog Stainless Steel Handle

If so what is the weight, again I cannot find specs for this one either.

The iKon Bulldog is pretty much the same as the Weber, except ikon has its name stamped on the bottom of the handle. I bought the Weber Bulldog though and am currently using it on my 180. Works very well for me and has some weight behind it. I think the 180 handle is a bit too light, although I did get used to it. Just needed something a little heavier. Not sure how much the handle weighs though. I didnt think the name on the bottom was worth the extra money since I would probably never see it, so I went with the Weber.

Thank you spacegoast you just made my decision for me. I am ordering the Weber handle before I retire for the evening.

Gary, Here's a pic showing the Weber Bulldog. I swap it around so it was unattached in the photo. Bought mostly for the DE89 head but it fits the others. A worthwhile score.

Thanks for the info I will check it out. Does anyone know the weight of the Merkur 180 handle?

The Merkur 180 handle weighs in at 30grams.

The 85mm Ikon Bulldog weighs in as 74 grams.

The Edwin Jagger DE89 handle weighs in at 47 grams.

Rob where can I buy one of those black Gillettes? I have to have one of those. Thanks for pisting the specs I have been searching for.

Along with the Weber Bulldog and UFO (which is by far my favorite) I'd also recommend a Sabi T2 razor, I bought one just for the handle, as do many other folks. It's very cheap and is a solid, plated brass handle, similar to the old Gillettes. The weight is 72g/2.5oz and length is 81mm/3.2in.

Not sure how much you are willing to spend, but Weber makes a Bulldog handle (made in the USA) on amazon for $38.00. It weighs 2.4 oz. They also make a wave handle for the same price.

Several months ago I looked into this myself for my EJ DE89, and learned that the Weber weighs one gram more than the Ikon, and sells for twenty bucks less. You won't regret the Weber, it's very sturdy with a great feel and grip.

Regarding this mat black Flaretip...

I didn't expect multiple inquiries about how to get one. I sent mine out to be cerakoted. Anyone could do the same. Better yet to have the finish done on a two or three piece razor, since they're easily disassembled for finishing. My 1960 Gilette Flaretip wasn't taken apart prior to finishing, but it worked out fine.

Can I post the resource here? A link to this guy's web site? I appreciate if anyone (mod or admin) could tell me that it's OK or not to... in which case I'll send out multiple PM's to you guys who asked along with some additional info.

This cerakote applicator, isn't a member here. I have no affiliation with him, and he's not the only place in the 'world' to get this done. He's pretty well-known, mostly for his work on firearms, knives & flashlights. Also, I'd guess there are members here who might also do the same kind of work. I'm not looking to compromise anyone by posting a link.

Also Gary... I don't mean to clog up your thread. I might've not said anything and just PM'd you privately, but why not share with anyone who's interested? :)

i use the longer handled webber classic on a fatip head and the bulldog on a jagger head, both are very well made handles with great weight and grip.

I have a 180 and enjoy it very much indeed. Once in a while I will use my Durham Duplex handle on it and it feels just about perfect! The Duplex's can be found cheaply if patient and the handle will fit most Gillettes as well.

@RobE thank you for the info on the black razor this is great info. I have 3 old razors I will be sending to have this treatment done. Don't worry about clogging the thread this newly discovered razor posted by you is great.

Another option (more like a long shot) would be to post an ad in the BST section for a BRW handle. However, given the fact that Bob isn't making them any more (RIP, Bob), be prepared to pay for one. I absolutely love mine but you'll need to pry it from my cold, dead hands. :thumbup1:
