What's new

New handle - can you help ID the wood?

Turned a new one and trying some glue ups. Took a piece of unknown exotic and split it to glue bookend style. Added a section of sandwiched veneers (maple, two dyed blue maple, and another white maple). Kind of like it.

But I’m unsure of the wood. A friend gave it to me who had it stashed for a long time. It was a plank that was obviously chainsaw milled on either side. Pretty wood but I’m not 100% what it is. Any guesses from the experienced folks welcome please.

Knot mocked up and have not put CA finish on yet.

Maybe a type of Mahogany?
How hard was it?

It is a deep red but I see why folks are suggesting walnut. I’ll take some pics beside walnut to help show color but definitely different.

It is quite hard, dense, and heavy. And it has been sitting 2-3 decades easy. Really heavy stuff.

I need to put a finish on it. I like this one.
