What's new

New guy here.what else do I need to try?

First, thanks to all for this place. A great forum for guys like me who take wet shaving almost...too seriously. :001_rolle

This is my first post, but I've lurked here for a long time. I have a serious problem with collecting aftershaves. I love all aspects of wet shaving, and have tried MANY products, but somehow I've managed to be quite content with two DE razors (Merkur 34C and 38C), one brand of blade (Feather), a single shaving cream (TOBS Mr. Taylor), and two brushes (Semogue 1305 boar and Parker extra-dense badger). Truthfully, I could whittle that down even further, and be just fine with either of the razors or brushes by themselves.

Aftershaves, though, are a different story. I'm corrupted and unstoppable in my quest to try different bottles. Here's what I have so far:

Pinaud Clubman
Pinaud Clubman Vanilla
Pinaud Citrus Musk
Pinaud Osage Rub
Taylor of Old Bond Mr. Taylor
Pitralon (German)
Pitralon (Swiss)
Irisch Moos
Skin Bracer
Aqua Velva Ice Blue
Ach Brito Lavender
Fine Classic
Fine Clean Vetiver
Fine Platinum
Musgo Real
Proraso
Speick
Old Spice
4711
Floid Vigoroso
Lucky Tiger
Murray and Lanman Florida Water
Lustray Blue Spice
Gabels Bay Rum
Alt Innsbruck
Captain’s Choice Bay Rum (not a fan for some reason - would send a virtually-full bottle free of charge to anyone here that wanted to pay postage)

I have no true favorites - every day it seems I'm in the mood for something different, although I do sometimes get on a kick and splash on the same thing every day for a week.

I've even decanted my Clubman, Skin Bracer, Old Spice and Aqua Velva into vintage glass. It's ridiculous, I know, but that doesn't change the facts.

My question is, are there any out there with the sickness? If so, do you see any glaring omissions in my collection? I have an entire cabinet (actually an old Samsonite suitcase converted to a cabinet) devoted to just aftershaves, so there is still room for more....

Thanks in advance for any tips, and I look forward to spending even more time obsessing over small details amongst you guys...

I have seen Lúcido (near-neutral aroma with nice level of menthol) in Japanese stores here in NYC.
That's about it, though.

And like sake, the Lúcido costs about twice as much here ($12) as it does there.

I don't see anything from Master Well Comb (Lord and Master, Topaz, Iceland Breeze, etc)

and a nice Caribbean splash, Alcolado Glacial.

Hello and welcome. Great to have you here. That looks like a super line-up for now. I'd take a break and use some of that up before getting more.

Welcome and thanks for chiming in.

Those are some terrific after shaves you have in your den, but no den is complete without a Myrsol or two. :wink2:

That looks like a super line-up for now. I'd take a break and use some of that up before getting more.

After my splurge on several kinds in Japan, I reckon I'm set for at least a year...and that's on top of some others I already had!

The Stirling aftershaves are pretty nice with glycerine, witch hazel, alcohol, and fragrance. You can add menthol to them when you order if you like it. My favorites are Barbershop and Glastonbury.

I see you have "Fine Classic" on there. I assume that's "Fine American Blend", so I won't suggest it!

I also decant any of my drug store aftershaves into glass bottles. I don't normally find vintage ones, I just use empties of other companies (like Fine or Stirling). I find it greatly improves the scent...

Great collection! All my regulars are on your list, except:

Proraso Refresh
Paco Rabanne Pour Homme
Ogalalla Bay Rum and Sandalwood
Captains Choice Lime
Dominica Bay Rum

Welcome aboard Unleaded! It's nice to see you posting now, obviously you have been lurking for a while due to that laundry list of aftershaves you posted! We must have been enabling the heck out of you! Anyhoo, I didn't notice any real musk type scents on your list, maybe you could try Aqua Velva Musk or Jovan Musk? I look forward to hearing more from you soon.

Pinaud Bay Rum
Pinaud Lime Sec
Barbie
Canoe
British Stirling
and most definitely Lilac Vegetal
I too share the AS collecting disorder. Welcome aboard!:001_smile

Thanks so much for the replies and suggestions! I've made a note of all of them. BSAGuy, you are definitely the voice of reason. It's lunacy to have more aftershave than I can use in my lifetime. I know that. However, I also know that if discretion is the better part of valor, I'm probably unlikely to display any valor in my fight to leave more aftershaves alone...:crying:

I do also have Pinaud Lime Sec, which I left off, and yep - I did mean Fine American Blend. Probably the most disturbing part of my list is that I did it from memory.

Musks are an excellent suggestion. Not sure how I haven't ended up with any, actually.

I don't even have to try the Veg to know it didn't choose me. Here's my heresy for the day: Pinaud Clubman isn't my favorite. I have decanted it into glass, and I'm trying to get it to grow on me, as I remember there always being a bottle of it on my grandfather's bathroom shelf when I was young. As it stands, I don't hate it, but I still smell overtones of baby powder and cat urine. If I get that from Clubman, I'm guessing going full-Vegetal is not in the cards. :biggrin1:

Hey welcome to the monkey house. You won't regret coming for the insider tour. That's a nice collection you have there although I'm surprised I didn't see old spice on the list. I would be glad to relieve you of your unwanted Captains choice if you're truly willing to pass it forward. It's one I'm interested in trying. Alternatively, I should tell you that there's always the option of a PIF contest. I wouldn't want to hog all the fun...

Agua Brava is a very manly night-time cologne of a similar ilk to Brut
Tabac Original is a classic scent, ideal for wearing on a night out on the town on hot summer nights

If you can find some, you should probably grab some Folsom. I heard a rumor they may be hard to come by soon. I hear PAA and Reef Point make some great splashes as well.
