New De Luxe President- redo engraving? Replated?!

Should I get this engraving done again? What about getting it replated? Or leave it as is?

if I do end up getting it replated I’ll go for the original silver that it was originally plated with. In honor of its history, I see the rhodium appeal but not for something so special as to change it completely like that. As far as the etching goes, eyes are deceiving. It does not feel the same depth that my Canadian bulldog does, which I think was said to be shallower than its American counterpart bulldog. To me if I think the results can come out how I want, then it would be worth the effort and money to get it fully restored. We’ll see what I can find out by reaching out to custom engravers

It's done with different methods, the Bulldog is knurled. The President never had deep engraving.

I would just snatch up another one. Maybe gold this time.. Then fix that bad boy back to its silver plated glory!:pipe:

Once I get it I’ll share some more pictures. Just for a little taste though...

That kind of very light engraving you'd just want to leave alone - in order to get a replate that looks decent they'd be buffing it first and that'll take the crispness out of the engraving, if not obliterate it altogether in places.

Eyes open and find another was the right call... Now you just have to decide whether you're going to keep it pristine or use it.

I'd contact Chris Evatt at Razorplate. I personally would get the crack stabilized if it can be done without changing the look. The patina is what accentuates the engraving. I'd leave it be. I'm a bit of a purist. Best of luck.

Fast update relating to this thread, as Chris Evatt has now replated my silver New President. He is very happy with the result and so am I (as always).

I will share only a couple of pictures for now - as a teaser, hehe. When I get the razor in hand I will take detailed photos with a high quality camera and a macro lense, so that you will get the full picture of this resurrection.

The President knurling pattern is strange because it is so incredibly delicate/light - not at all like your regular barberpole or other knurlings on other Gillette razors. So in pictures it does not project well compared to real life. If the camera’s too bright the knurling almost “disappears” in the photo. But as always Chris managed to bring it back to life while at the same time staying clear of interfering with it (no buffing!!), and now it stands out a lot more than before simply due to the changed coloring of the new silver hue.

One of the worst mistakes in refurbishing is when buffing is done - not just for looks but it removes/alters the real tactile feeling of the razor which in my mind destroys it.

More to follow, but just to state that yes, I am definitely still on the minority team of “yes, lets refurbish/replate but keep the traces of history”

Gentlemen, my replated New President arrived today in all its glory - with new silver hue applied by Chris Evatt. And applied as a tripple layer silver on bright nickel base, exactly as was done originally in the 1930s.

Crack is repaired and basically unnoticable unless looking for it. And as you can see Chris has not buffed or tried to take away any of the many marks of 80+ years of happy gentlemanly shaves. This razor has done 1,000s of shaves so far - and will do many more with me.

I think this work speaks for itself and I bow my head in awe :001_tt1:
