NEW: dating and replating

Dear all, two questions about a vintage Gillette NEW (the one in this thread, to be precise).

Can I replate it? I heard that some materials cannot stand the process, so I wanted to make sure it would be safe. (I suppose it is made of brass, correct?)

Is there a way to date it, as there are no codes?

Thanks,

Sure, it'd replate just fine, though the replating job may run you more than just finding a NEW in better condition.

Since yours doesn't have the patent number stamping on the underside of the guard plate, the current best guess would be that it's an earlier production from before or not long after the AutoStrop merger was completed in 1931.

Very good advise porter...unless the razor has a emotional significance its not worth replating.
