New arrival: TGN Finest in butterscotch - pics

Finally arrived yesterday! From the good folks at TGN. 24mm Finest knot, set at 48mm in a butterscotch handle. Test lathered last night to get the slight funk out and have a first "play". I hope you enjoy the pics and let me know please what you think of the new addition. I reckon this will be my last brush for a while...

After test lather - lovely bloom. As I was hand lathering the tips felt ridiculously soft but the shorter loft gave some decent backbone.

Looks really nice in full bloom. How does it stand up to your Chubby?

Used it last night for it's first "real" lather as opposed to test. Firstly, the handle is just great - a decent size to grip on (unlike Chubby which is a tad small). Second, the knot needs a LOT of loading (just like the CH). Third, the tips are an order of magnitude SOFTER than the CH and very luxurious. Lastly, it needed a little more effort to whip up the lather on the face than the CH does (but I've read this about Finest knots). I can see myself rotating between this and the CH a lot. Different qualities to the 2 but if I had to put my fiscally-responsible hat on I don't believe that at 120 bucks versus 60 the CH is twice as good as the TGN. My apologies if that upsets blokes who've got a whole stable of Simpsons. I'd still like to try a Duke 2 - and a super-exotic Manchurian - but an excursion down Simpsons lane where I've got 1 of each...? Can't see it happening. On the other hand I CAN see myself building a few more TGN brushes but that's for next year...

Hey Mad:

I couldn't agree more with you. I sold my 3 Simpsons brushes a couple of weeks ago (including a Super 3 Persian Jar). I enjoy my restored brushes more as well.

Cheers,

Something very personal in picking your knot, handle, setting loft etc...I enjoyed the exercise so much I've started lurking on the Restoration forums and had a peek at vintage handles. I'd love to build my own.

Hey Paul:

It is not that hard. Read the Stickies in the Resto forum to get you started. Ebay has lots of nice old brushes that are great candidates. Ask lots of ? There is a ton of talent on the board to help you if run into trouble

Very nice brush. I am considering a custom from TGN or WD and really like the knot and loft you chose. I like a little backbone and scritch. The restore sounds intersting too. Like I need something else to throw money at. First pipes now this. SWMBO must never find out.

Once you get the first custom brush you will need a few more to even the set. If you get a 22" then you'll need a 24", 26" etc.. Also make sure you keep a few of your original cheap brushes (that's all you needed right?) surrounding the more expensive ones so when the SWMBO is around you can say, "man the fella's on B&B get 200 and 300 dollar brushes but I pay like (as you pick up a few of the cheapest of your herd) 10 dollars, 13 dollars, 16 dollars". It's a little slight of hand but it works!

Sneaky....very sneaky. I love it.
