New and scared of DE

Hello all. I will be 40 this Dec. so I have been shaving ~25 years, but new to old school wet shaving. Earlier this year I bought some of the Harry’s products. This was a big deal since I have been buying a 52 pack of disposables for the last 5 or so years. Anyway, liked the product but to be honest, I hate to shave. I shave in the shower as to me it is less of a PITA. Recently I had bought something on line and it came with an AoS sample pack. I used it and liked it. Watched some youtube videos and low-and-behold a new AoS store opened up in our mall. 30 mins and $125 later I have my first shaving stuff. I have to admit it – I absolutely love to shave now. I could have never imaged that something as simple as basting my face with shave cream would have made such a difference but it did. Now I do not have a lot of stuff. I still use the Harry’s razor, AoS oil, AoS cream and brush. But I did get some Razorock soap and an Omega silvertip today in the mail so excited about that.

But my real reason for posting is these two things:

  1. Thank you guys for sharing your knowledge. I love this site even though I am a lurker.
  2. I want to DE shave but I am scared. I have a mole on the left side of my face. It is not quite as big as Cindy Crawford’s but close. In my 25 years of shaving, I have only cut it bad one time. That was at 6:30 in the morning and it didn’t stop bleeding until about 3 in the afternoon.
So yeah, I am really scared. Any advice on how to ease into this? I highly doubt I would use the DE in the shower so this would be more for things like date night, etc.

Thanks ~ erik

Greetings Erik!

Have no fear. Post a new thread asking someone here who might have a large mole and how they deal with it. You will be surprised.

well this is embarrassing. thank you for the thread post and I will try to do a better job of searching in the future.

After reading that thread, I think I will just stick with cartridges form now as I do not want to have it removed.

DE's are no different, in my opinion, than shaving with a disposable single blade razor with no spring loaded head. They are heavier and generally have sharper blades, so you must not use any pressure, but you should understand the angle and technique fairly quickly. To be honest, most DE razors do not have a blade gap or angle that can allow really severe cuts in my experience. Just go slow and I can't imagine that you'll have many problems.

Any starter model you would recommend?

So Harry's is kind of a one off dollar shave club thing.
I think you could do better cheaper and just as safe with caution and the right razor.

I have a mole right under the jaw line too... I have not had more accidents with DE than what I had with cartridges. I never did this, but you could shave that area with a cartridge in the beginning, if that makes you more sure. Like 90% DE shave and the last 10% you do not dare to continue with you use your cartridge.

If you can shave with a disposable (with fixed mounted blades), then you can shave with a DE razor. Don't go too fast, and use no pressure.

You might consider using a Feather Popular as your first razor, because it is very mild and light. An alternative may be a vintage Gillette Tech. Superspeeds are next, but already require you to be more conscious of the "no pressure" rule.

I had a mole in the middle of my neck, it was a hassle to shave. I had it removed 30 years ago, the best thing I've ever done.

Welcome abord!

There's a reason that DE razors are called "safety" razors. They're safe to use. I bet that tens of millions of men, maybe hundreds of millions, have used these razors for close to 100 years. No need to be afraid of using a safety razor.

Worse cut I ever got was with a Gillette cartridge. I ended up with three parallel cuts.

Greetings and welcome to B&B. Your fears will subside after learn how to shave. I 'm sure someone else has similar issue wil chime in.
I would recommend a vintage Gillette Superspeed to start with they do not bite.

I would imagine that it would be no more dangerous than a cartridge razor or the disposables that you've been using.

Welcome to B&B. Your going to love it here.

Hope you don't mind my 2 Cent's ) I would recomend and Edwin Jagger Model 89L also known on here as the EJ89 it is an excellent Smooth Shaver , And has one of the best Chrome plating jobs in the Market. You won't regret DE Shaving once you get this.bad boy, Also there I'd no reason to get a mole removed you can simply shave around it with a DE Razor and get good at it with time.)

Any starter model you would recommend?
