Bowl: Captain's Choice Copper
Lather: Martin de Candre Fougère
Aftershave: Pinaud Clubman Lilac Vegetal

First Shave with my new Tatara Nodachi. Used the SB plate, the Masamune Handle (I prefer shorter handles) and a fresh Perma-Sharp blade. I'm not going to go too in depth after my first shave, but I will offer a couple of observations. First, the blade is well clamped. Reminds me, in some fashion, of how well the Gillette Post-War Fat Handle Tech clamps and controls the blade (before anyone breaks out the tar and feathers, this is a high compliment ;)). Second, this is a fairly smooth razor. It responded nicely to my preferred Steep Angle. Finally, I'm glad I went with the Masamune handle. The low profile head plus the short handle contributed to a fairly nimble and maneuverable performance. More to follow after Friday's shave. :)

Yep...very nimble on that Masamune handle. I really like the Nodachi/Masamune combo....feels like a high precision instrument that handles like a sports car. I used mine this morning with great results....as usual. One of my top 3 razors.

Blade: Perma-Sharp (2)
Brush: RazoRock Hive 24 Mokasoft HD Synthetic
Bowl: Captain's Choice Copper
Lather: Martin de Candre Nature
Aftershave: Pinaud Clubman

Shave #2 with my new Tatara Nodachi SB (Masamune Handle) using a Perma-Sharp blade. I'm using the same structured 3-Pass + Touchup Pass process I have been using for some time. Also continue to use my preferred steep angle. Comments from shave #2:
1) The SB is quite smooth.
2) The SB does not appear to be as efficient as some of my Big Dogs - especially on my "problem areas".
3) This is a nimble and maneuverable DE razor.
4) The overall ranking, using Efficient + Smooth = Effective, is very good.
I am curious to see if the OC plate kicks up the efficiency without losing too much smoothness. The plan is to use the SB plate for three more shaves (total of five) and then load a fresh Perma-Sharp with the OC plate for five shaves. :)

Without a doubt these are beautiful razors. I have hesitated on buying one because I was not sure which combo to start with.

Just to confirm, you have the Nodachi SB base plate and the Nodachi cap plus the Masamune handle?

How does this compare to the Rex Envoy?

Shave #5 with the Tatara Nodachi SB (Masamune Handle) using a Perma-Sharp blade and my standard steep angle 3-Pass + Touchup Pass process. Tomorrow, I start with a fresh Perma-Sharp and the OC plate.

My (subject to further editing) thoughts after five shaves using the SB plate:
1. The SB plate is smooth with a touch of blade feel - reminds me of the feel I get with the Rex Envoy (a razor I hold in high regard).
2. To my face, the SB plate feels medium efficient.
3. The SB plate provides a consistent DFS+/- result using my standard steep angle 3-Pass + Touchup Pass process. Caveat: Some extra work is required on my 'problem areas' to get the results and my 'grows like a weed stubble' seems to poke back through a bit faster than with my top Big Dogs.
4. Where does the Nodachi SB fit in my personal rankings? I'll expand further on this and other points as additional thoughts enter my brain, and also as points of comparison with the OC plate.

Shave #1 with the Tatara Nodachi OC (Masamune Handle) using a fresh Perma-Sharp blade. Started with my standard steep angle 3-Pass + Touchup Pass process. My thoughts after shave #1 using the OC plate:
1. The OC plate is more efficient than the SB with more blade feel. It also prefers a more neutral angle, rather than my usual Steep angle.
2. The OC plate did not present as smooth as the SB plate. My impression is that I will get the smoothness dialed in as I get the angle dialed in.
3. The OC plate gave me a solid DFS- result today.
4. More to follow tomorrow.

Shave #2 with the Tatara Nodachi OC (Masamune Handle) using a Perma-Sharp blade. After yesterday's shave, today I went to a neutral angle with my 3-Pass + Touchup Pass process. My thoughts after shave #2 using the OC plate:
1. Using a neutral angle, the OC plate is still more efficient than the SB plate. There is still more blade feel with the OC plate.
2. Having to use a neutral angle reduces, to a small degree, the nimble and maneuverable traits I enjoy with the SB plate.
3. Even with a neutral angle, the OC plate is not as smooth as the SB plate.
4. The OC plate provided a DFS- result again today.
5. After five shaves with the SB plate and two with the OC plate (and using efficient + smooth = effective as my yardstick) my INITIAL nod goes to the SB as the more effective plate. Have three more test shaves with the OC plate, though, so this initial impression is certainly subject to change.
6. More to follow tomorrow.

Shave #3 with the Tatara Nodachi OC (Masamune Handle) using a Perma-Sharp blade. Went with a neutral/shallow angle with my 3-Pass + Touchup Pass process. My thoughts after shave #3 using the OC plate:

2. Having to use a neutral/shallow angle reduces, to a small degree, the nimble and maneuverable traits I enjoy with the SB plate.

Shave #4 with the Tatara Nodachi OC (Masamune Handle) using a Perma-Sharp blade. Went with a shallow angle for my 3-Pass + Touchup Pass process. My thoughts after shave #4 using the OC plate:
1. Using a shallow angle, the OC plate efficiency is more in line with the SB plate using a steeper angle, but definitely not as smooth as the SB plate.
2. The OC plate provided a DFS- result again today.
3. After five shaves with the SB plate and four with the OC plate (and using efficient + smooth = effective as my yardstick) my 'PRELIMINARY / INITIAL / DRAFT' nod goes to the SB as the more EFFECTIVE plate. Have ONE more test shave with the OC plate so, who knows, the final test shave might completely change my impressions of the OC plate.

Razor: Tatara Nodachi OC (Masamune Handle)
Blade: German Bolzano (2)
Brush: Edwin Jagger Imitation Horn (25mm Synthetic Silver Tip)
Bowl: Captain's Choice Copper
Lather: Martin de Candre Nature
Aftershave: Pinaud Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum

Shave #5 with the Tatara Nodachi OC (Masamune Handle). Have been a bit frustrated by the OC plate and decided to change the blade to a German Bolzano - a blade that I've used to tame difficult razors (like the Roedter 1909) in the past. The rest of the kit remained as is to minimize variations. Went steep to test the combinationand stayed at the mid point between steep and neutral for the rest of the shave.

My thoughts on the Nodachi OC + German Bolzano combination:
1. Much better match between plate and blade. More controlled. More natural. Much more pleasant.
2. The ability to use a steeper angle is really nice. More in tune with my preferred technique.
3. The OC plate + German Bolzano blade got me to a nice DFS.
4. My nod still goes to the SB as the more EFFECTIVE plate, but it is much closer using the German Bolzano in the OC plate.
5. To cover my bases, Sunday's shave will be the SB plate with the German Bolzano blade. This could get interesting. ;)

Brush: Wild West Brushworks Volcanic Ash Handle (TNS 26mm Original BOSS Fan)
Bowl: Captain's Choice Copper
Lather: Martin de Candre Nature
Aftershave: Bootlegger's El Dorado

Changing to the German Bolzano blade brought the strengths of the Tatara Nodachi OC plate into better focus, but I still considered the SB plate to be the more EFFECTIVE (Efficient + Smooth = Effective) of the two Nodachi plates.

BOSC SCIENCE must know: Since the Bolzano worked well in the OC plate, will it work similarly well in the SB plate? There is only one way to find out- hence today's mating of the German Bolzano and the SB plate.

Same standard shaving protocol. Went with my preferred steep angle. My thoughts on the Nodachi SB + German Bolzano combination:
1. As with the OC plate, the German Bolzano seems more controlled, more natural and more comfortable than the Perma-Sharp (a blade that I really like in lots of different razors) in the SB plate - but it was much closer than in the OC plate.
2. Works great with a steep angle - definitely a big plus in my book.
3. The SB plate + German Bolzano blade got me to a nice comfortable DFS shave.
4. Final nod goes to the SB as the more EFFECTIVE plate.
5. I still have questions regarding why the Nodachi (a razor that looks like it provides great blade support) reacted as it did to the change in blades.
6. All in all, this has been a fascinating comparison experience!

The Tatara Nodachi is a fine razor. Well constructed. Nice finish. Good looking. Well balanced.

As to the question of where the Tatara Nodachi fits into my pantheon of razors? Somewhere between the top of the Runs With The Big Dogs Category and the lower third of the Big Dogs Category. I'm still fine tuning exactly where it sits.

The question that started this journey was how the Nodachi stands up to the Blackland Ti Blackbird. In my opinion, the Ti Blackbird is the preferable razor for my face, skin and beard. The Ti Blackbird remains at the top of my DE Big Dogs.

The Omega EVO is an outstanding synthetic brush that I reach for regularly. Whether bowl or face lathering, the EVO performs wonderfully.

Martin de Candre soap - as good as shaving soap gets!
