Need thermometer help

As some of you may or may not remember, my meat thermometer keeled over on me. Then my next meat thermometer keeled over on me. I thought they were both of pretty good quality until I used them a couple times. In case you were wondering, they were hand washed and dried.

Can anyone recommend a good, solid thermometer that will actually last? I have no problem kicking down for something that will last, I just want it to last.

Your index finger. Best meat thermometer I ever had, and it does not place a heating element directly into your meat.

1 You always have it with you when cooking
2 They tend to last a lifetime (in most cases)
3 They are generally robust

Whatever you need you can find it here- http://www.thermoworks.com/

Almost. They don't seem to have an infrared thermometer that can handle 1100F and log to a computer. Maybe if I call. And, no, I didn't make that up. It's on my list of soldering toys for this year. :001_smile

They do have some nice meat thermometers, though. I melted the last one by leaving it in the oven.

My Thermapen is the best cooking purchase (besides my cast iron) I have ever made. Its very fast, comes with a certificate of calibration and a little baggie of Jelly Bellies!

If you look around, you can probably still find the old version on sale. I got it for $60 when they were switching over to the splash proof model.

If you want one that will go inside an oven, I suggest this version that takes a k type probe. You can then buy the 2 second response probe (the same one that is on the thermapen) for $30, and a separate high temp wire probe for ~$15, which is further down the page. This version will give you more versatility over a Thermapen, but is a little more pricey. IMO, they make great thermometers.

+1. The Thermapen is an excellent choice.

Forgive my ignorance, but why would you need that (unless you are a chef or baker)?

I have this one. It has a nice, shrill beeping that lets me know when a roast is ready. Of course, a real chef would tell you to forget the thermometer and use your index finger.

It's pretty obscure. It's to measure soldering irons while actually using them. Point the laser at the tip and get a constant reading. Makes my my reviews more thorough.

I use the Taylor 9842 Commercial Waterproof Digital Thermometer. It's not the fastest instant out there. But it's accurate and gets the job done for under $20. Oh yeah. And since it's my grill thermometer, it gets left out in the rain. A lot. No ill effects.
