Need some advice on a trade gone sour

I hate to be the first one to tell you this, but you've been had. He's taken your straight and strop and fled to Brazil, which has no extradition treaty with Canada. This forum is notorious for crazed Canadians who prey on their fellow countrymen, trolling for the straight razor that will finally allow them to escape the frigid north for a warm tropical climate.
....

we're all nuts up here

being called for Duty is a valid excuse. he probably wasn't thinking about the B&B BST he had pending when he is leaving his family to risk his life for us.

anyway, i'm not sure i'd bother his wife while he's away, doesn't look good for anyone or anything. even though she was supposed to send them, she has more on her mind right now, then getting you your razor.

i'd say give it some time, but that's just me.

as for the BST and using it, i've had nothing but positive results. i was on the board less then a week and someone sent me a razor to look at, and if i liked it, keep it and pay for it, or send it back. i then purchased 2 razors from someone and becuase of high shipping costs from the US to CAD, they threw in a freebie gillette.

Regardless, it's a shame that someone would take advantage of you. And by proxy, all of us that use B/S/T.

I hope he responds and holds up his end of the bargain. Good luck!:mad3:

The wife's investment
I got stiffed on B/S/T once and haven't been back since. I sent a large stack of expensive beer brewing mags to a fellow member for free on the condition that he would pay the book rate shipping of $3. I know it's only $3, but it ticked me off that he stiffed me.

I will only participate again with members that I am familiar with.

If he is on military duty, he should still have access to email. I didnt have problems communicating with folks back home when I was deployed- until 2 months ago. Eeverything on military side now is electronic. Its sad stuff like this happens. Happened to me too- its was 12 $ worth, but the idea of getting stiffed when all thats left here is trust is dissapointing. Hope it works out for you.

Sad to hear about a deal going sour . . . especially one built on gentlemanly trust.

If he stiffed you, shame on him.

If he stiffed you using deployment as an excuse, triple shame on him, and then some!! That is a dishonorable action that shows not only no respect for you, but no respect for the military, veterans, and those who gave all so he could have the freedom to trade razors with others over the internet!!!

Now that I've ranted, here's something constructive . . .

How about requiring a separate registration for participation in BST? In doing so, the user would have to provide their full name and address to the mods. That way, if something did go south, the injured party would at least have a name and address to send a Small Claims Court summons to!

Another way to protect yourself is not to trade using BST, but rather engage in two sales transactions. I don't send my razor out until you pay my invoice, and you send yours to me as soon as I pay. With PayPal involved, there is recourse in the event things go south, and at least we would have each other's name and address as registered with PayPal. The small percentage that we each pay PayPal is inexpensive insurance that helps ensure honesty and assists with recovery.

Have you communicated with the mods about this? There are no photos of his razors posted in the thread, apart from the images you posted of your stuff. He's been a member for almost two years, but he doesn't have Active Duty or Vet tags (although some people choose no to do that). And you're communicating with his wife? By email?

I am a kind and trusting guy, but it sounds to me like you're getting played. Get in touch with one of the mods. Unfortunately, since this was a trade not a sale, you don't have recourse to PayPal or anything like that. It might be too late to get your razor back, but you can help to keep somebody else from getting jammed up in the future.

Hope this all works out!

These are the photos he sent to me. I also wanted to correct myself. I communicated with his wife one time and it was through his email. She apparently was asked to go into his email and find my email and contact me.

So have you brought this to the Mod's attention? If your trading partner is on the up and up, maybe they can set your mind at ease. If not, the information might be able to help prevent someone from doing this again (for example, by re-registering under another name).

Note: Since current policy is to put your name in these photos, the images you got could be from anywhere. An old trade on B&B, eBay, etc. That doesn't mean you got scammed, but it sure sounds like it.

Terry, I'm sorry to see a trade go so badly. I have an Edwin Jagger DE89L that you can have. I will even pay the shipping. Let's call it a PIF. There is one string that is attached to this offer. If the razors that you were suppose to get in the trade show up or if you decide for some reason you no longer want this 89L, then you are to PIF it to someone else. If you are interested please PM me. :001_smile

To the OP: you are looking a GIFT HORSE in the mouth!

Face it. You probably got hosed. Most military members know in advance when they're being deployed. The "suddenly called up on military duty" has been used before.

It's been closing in on two months for a parcel that should have taken less than a week to arrive even if it's crossing the US-Canada border. Send the guy one more email asking him to provide some sort of explanation...and then make some sort of complaint to B&B's mods....and then forget about it.

I would definitely stay in touch with his wife. I can understand the idea of him being out of the country, but sending a package should not be too much trouble as long as she knew what to send.

I'm a few hundred miles away from PA, but I would bet that there are people on this forum who might live close to that part of the state.

I've always had good luck with trades/purchases on the BST. I did make one trade with a member in Germany that was delayed a couple of times and took well over 2 months to show up, but it did get here safely. I still think that BST is a great place and I wouldn't give up on this trade yet either.

Good Luck!
Anyone in Lancaster, York, Harrisburg, or around there could help. Travel times in that area are pretty good.

Gents, I don't know if the member was suddenly called back but if I remember correctly, one of my construction supers was called back to active duty but he was given either 45 or 60 day notice. That was 6 years ago. It does sound strange. I hope something positive comes out of this.

Well, he might be in the sandbox with other shaves on his mind, or doe's anyone know how to keep track of one of those email numerical addresses to see if he's on-line under another user-name? (Sorry, I don't remember what that numerical address is called).

If he is in the military good luck to him, and to you getting fair compensation.

Joe

Speaking as a member of the military I can say with some confidence that there are few instances that would take you away in the middle of the night, ok more than a few but I doubt that the person in question is in one of those MOSs or billets. I'm sorry to say this but I believe you've been had and this "person" has used our military to do it.:mad3:

I tend to agree with this statement. When I had just joined the acitve reserve back in late 90, got the call in Jan 91 for Desert Storm and only had 24 hours notice. I went to an overseas contingency hospital, had no internet or email service but plenty of telephone service back to this side of the pond.

I think you are referring to the IP address. IP = internet protocol

Thank you for the kind offer. I will accept you gracious gesture and promise to PIF it if the others do get arrive on my doorstep. I'll send you a PM.

We used to say, buy the seller not the watch. In other words, know who your seller is or for that matter who your buyer is. It was not uncommon for me to get emails asking for a reference on someone else on our forum. Keep in mind we were buying, selling and trading items in the hundreds to thousands of dollar range. I have bought and sold in the USA and as far away as Australia and Turkey.
Never had a problem

So when it comes to Shaving equipment although its not a huge cash outlay its still terribly disappointing when something goes wrong. I have noticed the same quality of people here as I have seen in the watch world. I would imagine problems are few but sometimes getting a reference is a great idea.

I'm so glad that you decided to accept my offer. I own a Edwin Jagger Georgian Ebony DE razor that has the same head as the 89L. I found that I wasn't using the 89L at all, even though it's a great razor. I've actually been wanting to PIF him for a while now, but I wanted him to go to a good home. :blushing: Then I saw this thread. I also saw that you were a contributer to B&B and running a PIF yourself in honor of your 1,000 post. Yours was exactly the kind of home I was looking for this razor to have. There almost seems like a touch of karma at play here.

I will try to get him shipped out later today. :001_smile
