Need some advice on a trade gone sour

I participated in a trade off the BST earlier this month. I initiated communication with the OP on Dec 17th. He requested a trade for two DE razors. We agreed on my Nowill & Sons straight razor and a basalwood strop. We also agreed on sending the items with tracking. I did so on Dec 24th and he was supposed to do the same. After I went to the post office I emailed him the tracking information. Unfortunatley he did not send me his tracking information. I thought that perhaps he got into a car accident or something so I waited. Well I checked Canada Post and it seems that the package was delivered successfully to his home yesterday. What shall I do at this point. The system shows that this gentleman has not been online since Dec 18th. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I hate to be the first one to tell you this, but you've been had. He's taken your straight and strop and fled to Brazil, which has no extradition treaty with Canada. This forum is notorious for crazed Canadians who prey on their fellow countrymen, trolling for the straight razor that will finally allow them to escape the frigid north for a warm tropical climate.

But seriously, this is the worst time of the year for sending stuff in the mail. If he hasn't been on line for a couple of weeks, he may be visiting relatives in the Northwest Territory and snowed in without any Internet access. If he doesn't show up after New Year's contact a moderator and we'll send Sgt. Preston of the Yukon out to look for him.

I would wait a bit...I've had family waiting on a package and seen "delivered" on the website when they never got it. The postman delivered it to "someone" who signed for it.

If you don't get an email response withing a couple days after the New Year, then assume the worst.

Got an email from the gent's wife today. He got sent away for military duty on short notice just before Xmas which is why he hasn't been online for so long. I didn't want to jump he gun and assume but I think we are okay now. His wife will send the package today I think. Thanks for chiming in everyone.

Glad to see things are working out. Most of the members here are top notch folks. Many people here have worked really hard to uphold the standards of B&B and its good to see that they are being maintained. Good on you for your patience.:thumbup1:

All is well that ends well...which it looks as though will be the outcome in your case.

Best regards,

Doug

Today is Feb 01, 2011. I received an email from Gary's wife on Dec 31st. She said she would mail my razors and it's been just over a month now with still no package arriving on my doorstep. Gary (aka some kind of ugly) has still not responded to my numerous emails. He hasn't logged on since Dec 18th. I am a believer the members here are decent people and so I have remained patient. However I also am curious if anyone has had any dealings with this member. As I understand Gary is away on military duty. I know nothing about the military but I am hoping that at some point he'll be able to access a computer and respond.

Not looking good this is why I won't take part in trades on this site.

I wanted to try the Edwin Jagger razors without having to pay cash and since I had so many razors I thought it would be easier than selling and then paying cash.

One bad deal versus how many thousands that have worked?

+1 I'm not going to let this trade disuade me from buying/selling/trading on the BST. I'm going to stay positive and give Gary some more time. I'm sure he didn't intend on all this. I would be curious to know if it's normal to not have computer access while on military duty overseas? Can anyone chime in and offer some insight please? Thanks.

I suppose that would depend on exactly where you were and what you were doing.

Don't you have his wife's email address from the December post she sent you? Or did she use the PM board here? Perhaps the mods could email her and give her your email address and request she contact you.

Since you have previously had email contact with his wife, have you tried sending her an email recently? It's hard to speculate what his military assignment is, but in today's world, hard to imagine he's been off the grid for six weeks.

Question for you. When you are communicating with the member did he send you pics of the razors with some kind of proof that he has them like a sign with his name on it?

His razors were listed in the bst.

Just curious if anyone has communicated with this gentleman. He still hasn't responded nor has he logged in. He lives in Lancaster, PA. I wonder if anyone can go 'knock on his door'? His wife was supposed to send me the razors but I haven't received them yet. Someone had sent me a message offering to assist but I passed at that point because I felt confident in the trade. However now I am having my doubts as it's been almost two months. Unfortunately my mail box has a limit of messages and I've long deleted that message so I don't remember who it was.

I would definitely stay in touch with his wife. I can understand the idea of him being out of the country, but sending a package should not be too much trouble as long as she knew what to send.

I'm a few hundred miles away from PA, but I would bet that there are people on this forum who might live close to that part of the state.

I've always had good luck with trades/purchases on the BST. I did make one trade with a member in Germany that was delayed a couple of times and took well over 2 months to show up, but it did get here safely. I still think that BST is a great place and I wouldn't give up on this trade yet either.

Good Luck!
