Need of advice about TGN 24 mm. Finest knots

Hi mates!

I'm thinking in re-knot my Vie&Long horse brush with a TGN 24mm. Finest, as I finally didn't like that kind of hair but I'm not sure about some points about it:

- Bulb or Fan shape? I'll use for soaps and facelathring mainly. Would be the extradense a con (foam hunger or too much firm)?

- At which height should I fit the knot, 50 or 55mm.? Maybe even more?

Thankss!

I like the extra stuffed bulbs myself. The current batch of TGN Finest is very soft, so the extra backbone does not make them rough on the face. As for lather hogging, I dont think they hog lather too bad, but I'm a fan of very dense brushes. So I am more forgiving of that then most, however they hog less lather then dense three bands do.

As for loft I had my 24mm set at 50mm to face lather, if you bowl lather a bit higher would not hurt and 55 might be better.

Bulb at about 50mm for sure!

I prefer the fan to the bulb, I have a 22mm fan set at 47mm works very well, I also have a 24mm bulb set at 49mm, it also works very well. The fan just feels a little better on my face.

Thanks for your advices, mates!

So I'll try then with 50mm. loft and see... I'm only insecure about what type is better, fan or bulb shape. Will be better then fan shape for facelathering or there isn't any remarkable advantage over bulb shape?

Cheers

I personally prefer the fan myself. I think it actually lets you get more use out of the bristles and better distributes them both during loading and lathering.

I think the bulb is better suited for face lathering and fan for the bowl. Your loft preference is subjective. They do not hog lather until you set them to low and reduce their ability to flow.

I re-knotted my Vie Long horse brush with a TGN Finest 24mm & it turned out much better, love it now. I experimented with both knots (fan & bulb) & went with fan because it gave me a better result-but the bulb was great also, it's in another handle & I like it very much. I found that 48-54mm was the upper & lower limit in loft-for me. I feel that if I stay between 48-54mm with either knot it will work well. Lower side for fan, higher side for bulb. Dense, but not too dense, with good flow & is definately not a soap/cream hog. Try both, then you will know for sure-for yourself...IMHO..

Vic

ps: I like good backbone. I get that with these lofts.

Thanks for your advices mates!

Now I have made some work and throw away the old horse knot. But now I have a problem: some of the old glue had left into the hole, as you can see in this photo:

and unfortunately I don't have a Dremel to help clean it. Do you know any other method? I have measured the hole and I think I could fit the new knot at 55 mm. with the rest of glue in, and 53 mm. if I could clean it... Do you think that there will be some problem if a leave the old glue in? And with this data, I think the bulb knot will be the best solution, because if I choose a fan shape probably will be too higher.

Thanks!

I've restored several brushes with TGN Finest knots. I love them. I tend to favor the bulb slightly over the fan. Just a matter of taste.

I find that if you set the fan higher than 50mm it tends to splay more than I like. In either case 50 mm seems to be the magic number. 49-52 mm is my range. Those pictured knots are Finests set at 50mm, post bloom.

TGN used to sell a special short-loft version of some of their knots. That might be the answer to your situation. The website has short-loft in Best but if you contact them, they might have a few Finest still in inventory. They are very nice and helpful (Vanessa).

If not, I'd try to find a machine shop or carpenter to drill the hole deeper for you. Even with the shorter loft, the deeper in the hole the knot is, the more the knot is restricted from fanning out.

Here's a couple of restores, both with the TGN Finest 24's. I set the fan at around 48, the bulb a smidge over 50. Both work great, though I may end up raising the fan to 50, too.
