Need Honeymoon Ideas

I'm not a fan of Hawaii - If I did ever go back though, I'd go to Kauai.

The trip I really want to take is Costa Rica - beautiful, fantastic climate, you can do mountains and beach on the same trip (hell, in the same day). Everyone I know who has gone has absolutely loved it.

I'd also like to go to Alaska.

+1 on Costa Rica. I spent about 6 weeks there on a study abroad program in college and saw a ton of different environments: lowland jungle, highland jungle, lowland plains, beaches, volcanic mountains, etc. Amazing variety for such a small country. Add the incredible ecological variety and it is an awesome place to visit. It is very politically stable, crime is pretty low (though there have been a few high profile incidents towards tourists), and there is some interesting history in the country too. The public bus system is very good and can get you almost anywhere in the country for cheap, and there are private groups that cater to tourists.

It isn't a great choice if all you want is a luxurious beach resort to stay on your whole time. But if you want to explore and have a sense of adventure it's an awesome place to visit.

NO NO NO on Costa Rica for a Honeymoon gents! My husband thought he would do the honeymoon plans and keep them a surprise. Well about 6 weeks prior to I really had to know how to pack we we married in March so weather varied a lot.

My hubby purchased airfare to Costa Rica, had reservations in a Congo hut on a private island where the jungle meets the ocean, sounds great. What you must remember about women we like to be pampered, especially on our honeymoon. I was not about to go hang out in a hut with bugs, bugs, bugs and more bugs. Sleep with tents over your bed.

Many parts of the trip sounded wonderful for a fun vacation but not a honeymoon. We lost a lot of money because I really had the whole island, poolside bars, beach with civilization and resort in my head.

Long story short we went to Punta Cana and stayed at Melia Caribe. They had the most wonderful restaurants, live music, casino, water sports, horseback riding beach side, dune buggy rides through the rustic parts of town. They had anything and everything you could possible want. For dinner every night a horse drawn buggy would pick us up and take you wherever you had reservations for that night. It was very clean and I loved it way more than Jamaica. This was a very romantic resort if you are into that kind of thing. I only have enjoyed one trip as well and that was in my single days to Amsterdam a couple of times

Santa Fe, NM. In the September time frame, the weather is perfect, it is a beautiful location, access to great nature areas, artist colonies, Taos, many medium to high end spas, and great food. Oh the food! I gained 10 lbs on my honeymoon there.

I think NYC and Vegas are really good options. NYC especially since you guys like to dine. Vegas is good for that too, but not anywhere as close as NYC.

If you want to opt for international travel, London is hard to beat as everyone speaks English and there is plenty to do there in terms of sights, tours, restaurants, and pubs. On our trip, the wife and I did a day-tour where we saw Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, and the Roman Baths. During the day we got to enjoy tea time (I need clotted cream and scones!), and wrapped the day up with a pint and a meat pie/fish and chips. Amazing day. Don't forget about all the shaving stores out there!

Chicago can be a pretty fun place. You have America's best pizza, hotdogs, roast beef sandwiches, and steaks all in one spot. Then you have the Sears Tower, Buckingham Fountain, and 2016 Olympic ads the city refuses to take down. Then you have a theater district as well which is usually playing pretty good stuff. They finally got rid of Wicked which was a desperately needed breath of fresh air.

And congrats on the wedding!

Thanks for all the ideas, guys and gals. I think right now we are leaning toward NYC. I got a recommendation about this place http://www.castleonthehudson.com and Kathryn thinks it's awesome. I was told we can catch the train right into the city

We are getting married in out hometown just north of Pittsburgh and are thinking about doing a couple days in the Poconos and then driving to NY.

Tarrytown is indeed a very easy train ride to the City.

Just an update.

Over the weekend, after many months of indecision, we finally decided on the Iberostar Grand Hotel Bavaro in Punta Cana. It's a 2 year old resort and from everything I have read it is awesome. Ironically he we had dinner with some friends over the weekend who had honeymooned last summer at one of the other Iberostar resorts on the same property and they said that Grand Hotel was they nicest they ever saw, so I'm pretty happy with our decision.

I recommend a nice 10-day carribbean & south amercian cruise. It's insanely good bang-for-your-buck, and you get to go lots of places instead of just a few, without worrying about mundane things.

My wife and I went to the Bahamas for our Honeymoon. I think you definitely should get feedback from your soon to be wife as to what se wants to do and where she wants to go. As with most things in marriage, any big decision should be discussed.

One thing my wife and I wanted to do was to go to some place where most people do go. That way it would be a little more special. Out west here is seems a large number go to Hawaii so we didn't want to go there.

This is where a good travel agent can help. Talk about what you want to do, likes and dislikes. The agent should be able to give you several ideas that may interest you and hopefully with a cost that you can afford.

I though about New York City, maybe see a couple shows go to some museums and go out to some great restaurants, since we both like to dine. I’ve only been to NYC once and that was on a tour trip in high school. I have no idea how to get around in a city like that, and again I’m worried about things being redundant.

I live in NYC, its not ruff at all any more, it is fast, crowded and loud. All the time. But it has the best of every thing in the world.

If you come out here don't stay in midtown stay either below 23rd st or in the 60-100 st area on the east side. these are the residential parts of manhattan and will be more chill, while still giving you access to all the touristy things. My friends usually stay either the Tribecca or Soho Grand or the Bowery Hotel or Ace Hotel.

There is allot to do here besides see a show, museums, and shopping. I like wondering around Chinatown looking at all the odd things and trying the pastries/ bubble tea at new places. Get a shave at Freeman's sporting club and eat at Freemans Alley. Drink in a LES dive bar during the day and meet crazy locals. Once you have seen Times sq get out of the 40's fast, there is nothing in that area thats not a tourist trap.

navigation is something you can get the hang of, if you have a smart phone get the hopstop app, or just check hopstop.com untill you get the hang of the subway (hint stops are not normally announced clearly, so count how many to your destination/ transfer). As far as walking the city is a grid Aves go up or down town streets go across town, street addresses are numbered either East or West and 5th ave is the dividing line (aka 15 west 15th street is going to be really close to 15th and 5th ave, 200 w 15th is going to be over near 9th ave). Cab drives know major hotels, tourist spots and thats about it, if your giving them an adress its better to give them a street and ave (like say 14th and 3rd if where you want to go is on 14th st near 3rd ave rather then the address)

OR

If NYC sounds like a good idea but intimidating try London, it has everything NYC has to offer, but instead of being in your face and turned up to 11 all the time, its a relaxed, solid 8.

The underground has the eaist map of any subway system in the world, you can walk around the city really easy (buy an A-Z street atless at a cornor shop/ book store they will make your life 100% eaiser) and cabbies know where every thing is (really every thing, even this illegal club we used to go to).

I lived there for 5 years so if you consider it, give me a shout and i'll let you in on some good pubs, food, and off the beten track stuff.

Why not visit one of the great shaving towns of the world..... London? The pound has taken a beating in the markets in recent times, so your dollar will still go a fair way in England. London is a great city, a living history lesson and you can do as much or as little as you would like. Strolling, shopping, galleries, museums, sightseeing........

I don't know if its been posted or not, but we wanted to go to the coolest resort in Jamaica I've ever seen....check it out RockHouseHotel.com. It's pretty affordable compared to others, but not all-inclusive, which could actually be a good thing!

Thanks for the ideas guys, but we actually just put down the deposit for a trip to Punta Cana check out post #30

Stay away from NYC. I should know. I live here. If you want to visit just come for a day or two. There are plenty of much nicer destinations.

Me and my wife can not stand the city. We escape to the suburbs every chance we get.

Take an escorted tour. Just do not use Globus or Cosmos. Israel, Ireland, Grand Canyon, Italy and Switzerland or all excellent destinations.
