Need help on gillette new

Hello,
First, please excuse my bad English.

I found this razor on ebay.
I need you to identify it.
This is clearly a new gillette, akin to this "low price set" here:
proxy.php

Only 2 things:
1 - It is a "special edition" Shriners: ararat city in 1924 and Shriners "logo" on blades box.
2 - the handle says "pat. January 13. USA 1920", or razors "new" were produced only from 1930 I think ... The handle is there a handle gillette old?

all is very bright, it seems that head and handle are covered with "red lacquer" (shown very well on a photo of the head). I would like to know how to clean it all, it is best to remove the lacker or not, and how to remove traces of oxidation. Thank you!

Here are the pictures:

Thanks to all!

The razor is a NEW as you surmised. But, the modern grooved blade which the razor requires was not introduced until 1930. The NEW design was patented in 1920, but the razor was not produced until the time of the matching blade. Your case would either belong to an earlier Old Type, or the Temple may have used an earlier case to house the NEW making it a legit set. The razor is obviously a very early one given the fact that later ones of that style came with the patent and reissue numbers stamped on the guard plate.

As for cleaning, use dish soap and water. Nothing harsher. Windex can also be effective on these lacquered razors. I would not attempt to remove the reddened lacquer. It doesn't affect the value.

Edit: I just saw the Patents Pending on the handle. Definitely an early one. 1930.

very nice set, unfortunately with the wrong razor. It´s a Old Type set. On my set I´m missing the cap :frown:

Achim, wouldn't any #102-A cap work to finish your set? You know how it worked in those early Gillette days, anyway, right? They would commonly use parts made in earlier years until the supply those parts were exhausted. I wouldn't see any problem using another cap, as long as it was proper.

maybe the original cap was engraved with the Arat Temple Logo? I don´t know it.

I have seen these on eBay in the past, but I cannot find a picture of one now. I do not remember seeing an engraved cap, but I cannot be sure without finding a reference. Maybe someone in here has a complete set.

OK thanks...
Should I kill myself?

Nope. The razor itself is an excellent example of a NEW, even if it didn't match the case. The case would be complete with a nice 1920's pocket type Old Type (as long as we can prove the cap isn't engraved). They are well worth what you paid. In fact, they are worth more than what you paid.

apparently, you know what I paid for it...

Thanks anyway.
This is my first gillette new and I want try to shave with it.
I'm not a collector.

Yup. It is easy enough to find in completed auctions. Besides, this set was on my watch list. Even though I extremely rarely ever buy a razor on eBay, I am always watching well over a 100 at any given time just to keep up with the market and to look out for special items.

Since you are not a collector, would you be willing to work a trade for that case and blade case?

I am not a collector, but I would not exchange my '52 Gibson Les Paul cons of a 2009 one...
As you says, the case would be complete... I have to think.

Nothing could remove those little black spots of oxidation?

Anything that would remove the tiny spots would also remove the lacquer and gold plating. If you wish to use it I would just clean with dish soap and warm water and then soak for 10-15 minutes in Barbicide, or an equivalent product. In the absence of Barbicide a brief soak in alcohol will work.

You are right, the caps are without the logo.
The logos are on the case and on the blade case only.
Here are some photographs of Ararat Temle set from my collection.
