Need help evaluating a razor

Hey all,

I'm about 40 days into wetshaving, and not doing badly with a DE. I inherited a straight razor years ago from a family friend, and only remembered its existence 10 days ago.

I'm not planning on shaving with a straight often. I don't think my complete lack of fine motor control is conducive to using one, but I'd like to give it a shot. Here are some photos of the razor, and I'd like to pick everyone's brain to see if it is worth sending off to be honed?

I think it's best to clean up the scales, hang it on the wall, and allow people to admire the beautiful etching.

As a shaver, it's pretty much had the bun.

Cheers,
Ian

That's some pretty serious hone wear. Not much left of the blade. I think maybe this baby should be retired...

That's what I had thought. Somehow it doesn't seem like an "S" curved blade would be the closest, most even shave.

The scales have lost their paint, but what else would go into cleaning them? They seem free of dirt and debris, is there something that'll restore the look?

If it were mine, I'd leave them pretty much as-is. Perhaps just clean the soap residue (?) from the etched areas with a damp Q-tip?

Could convert it into a letter opener. Maybe grind down the angle towards the toe just a little more, hone/dull the blade so that its not sharp, restore the paint on the scales and have a traditional, patriotic looking mail opener.

I am going to dissent here. I would say take the scales and find another blade to go in them. However, if you do not want to take it apart, then it should be cleaned up and retired as said above. It would look nice in a cabinet or to add to your collection. Shaving wise, I thinks its toast because the hone wear on the toe is the minor issue and getting the frown out would really take a lot of work and probably not even make the razor shaveable.
