Need B&B's expertise!

Hello all, I'm relatively new to the whole DE shaving (6 months or so) and still discovering my preferences and proper terminology to describe them.

I am looking for a badger brush that has a extremely large face feel without turning into a lather painting brush. More specifically, I have a 24mm QED horn brush and 28mm kimson brush that just instantly fold into a point and paint the lather on. I then ventured to try a 28mm and 32+mm Thater brushes - both of which also become relatively paint brush like, albeit to a much lesser degree. Potentially, this is what everyone refers to as less backbone and a bowl lather brush, however that is why I am asking B&B!

Brushes I'm considering:

Rooney Heritage "stubby" 2XL
Thater 2-band 28mm Fan

Do you face lather or bowl lather? I think it would be important for you to understand the different grades of hair as well. If you are using 3 band silver tips, if the loft is too high, they will most likely become floppy. It sounds like you want something with backbone, so I would recommend 2 band finest. Sounds like that Rooney is right up your alley. You really can't go wrong with that brush.

Currently I bowl lather, but wouldn't mind learning to face lather. Also, I have researched that 2-band provides more backbone and, in some cases, 'scritch'. I did not know if that would prevent the brush from coming to a point/painting lather. Additionally, I was worried that by going with 2-band and low loft, that it would result in a small face feel. Is it possible to get a large face feel AND strong backbone/low loft?

You could contact one of the custom brush makers here and have what you want made to your specs. I just did that with Rudy Vey and can't say enough good about my dealings with him!

Also, on another note, have you looked at Kent's BK8. There are some threads worth reading if your interested.

i believe setting the knot deeper will give it more backbone. probably best to ask a brush maker for what you want as moondoggie said.

Used to have fun with Commander Yellow Pantyhose
I prefer fan shaped knots because they feel bigger on my face. My favorite right now is a T&H rebranded Rooney 3/2 silvertip. Plenty of backbone and super soft tips. Another thought is my other favorite right now, which is the Semogue 2012 Special Edition mixed badger and boar--it's not as big on the face, but has tons of backbone and the tips are still soft.

* Simpsons Chubby 2 2-band
* Simpsons Chubby 2 Super Badger
* Wet Shaving Products Stubby 2-band 26mm or 28mm
* Custom brushes with a very good 2-band knot
Good luck.

Any of the chubby/stubby type brushes that have a shorter loft. The 2xl you mention falls within this. I have a 3xl that I enjoy using

My top face brush is a Duke 2. Not too big that it will eat up a half puck of soap each lather but not so small that it can't hold 4 or more passes of lather within it.

Sorry, are you looking for a face lathering brush or a bowl lathering brush.

i read your post again and still am not sure what you are after.

large face feel, not a paint brush, I'd say a Shavemac 3 band D01. Soft, dense, customizable and not a painter.
