Need an AS Recommendation - No "Old Man" Scents Please!

So here's the thing. I have tried a small handful of *** (Tabac, Floid original, Weleda, Irisch Moos) and settled on the Floid amber because it just makes my skin feel so nice. I love the scent of Tabac, but the AS is just so-so, Irisch Moos made me want to throw up and Weleda...meh.

But here's the thing, my wife complains that the Floid (and Tabac for that matter) makes me "smell like an old man." I was really hoping she would get used to the Floid scent, but no luck. She hates it. :mad3:

So can any of you young, hip, happening dudes recommend an AS that is sure to drive the (young) ladies nuts. I don't wear a cologne and don't really like them to be honest - too overpowering, but I'd like something with a nice scent that lasted for a while. BUT NO OLD MAN SCENTS! :tongue_sm

I welcome all your ideas!

P.S. - Please do not take offence to the "old man" comment if you fall within the mature age category. I'm no spring chicken, myself, and I know you are only as old as you feel. I just think some of the traditional scents remind people of their Dads and / or Grandfathers. I love em to death, but I'd rather not smell like either.

I think that you're going to have tougher going finding hip aftershaves than if you were to look, for example, for EdTs. Of course, you could always find a cologne you like and see if they make an aftershave too. Unfortunately, most of those products don't seem to be much more than watered down versions of the main fragrance.

You could try Proraso's aftershave. Nice fresh herbal scent. l'Occitane's Verdon also has a splash. Their variation on aquatic.

Not sure how available it is in Germany, but Adidas Dynamic Pulse is one my wife and even my teenagers like, and it's not acrid and overpowering like the AXE/Blade type stuff.

Brut and British Sterling work as well today as they did in the sixties. :ihih:
Who knows, she may even like Jade East and English Leather.

Couldn't agree more. Most of the modern aftershaves I've tried do little for my skin and leave my face dry and irritated. I usually end up following them up with a balm later in the morning. I also find most of the modern stuff to be somewhat generic. Strangely the traditional "Old Man" stuff seems to grow on you after a while. Even the wife likes most of the traditional aftershaves after a little warming up period. Maybe the dramatic difference from what is currently offered is a little of-putting at first?

Brut and Aqua Velva have nice clean scents that isnt old man. You might want to try English Leather black as well.

Having gone through this exact same process a few years ago, I can say that finding an AS splash without the dreaded "old man scent" is HARD. Just about all of the brands that guys have listed in this thread (e.g. Alt Innsbruck, Aqua Velva, Brut) fall firmly into this category. Others that will earn you disapproving looks from just about any female under 50 include:

  • Old Spice
  • Royall Lyme
  • Skin Bracer
  • Clubman
  • Dominica Bay Rum (any bay rum, really)
So, as others have mentioned, there are precious few splashes that have anything approaching a modern scent. L'Occitane used to sell a Cade splash that had a juniper aroma - while not "old man", it was kinda weird in its own right. Personally, I just gave up and switched to Nivea unscented balm with an EdT that my better half likes - much easier all around! :tongue_sm

Brut and Aqua Velva are the DEFINITION of old man smell!

The OP should look at scentless products and then chose a cologne if he wants to smell good.

The Blue Floid has exactly the same qualities of the Genuine (original) Floid, but with a different scent: more mentholated, fresher and "younger". :thumbup1:

How is a nice clean smell like old man stink?

"Old man smell" doesn't mean you stink like an unwashed senior citizen, it means the scent you're wearing smells like something an old man would wear. Something that would remind a potential date of their father or grandfather, killing any hope of a romantic interlude developing.

If each lady gets a veto on what you're wearing the only thing I can say is make a quick stop off on one of your dates with each one and try out a few AS's with her(s) there. Pretty soon you should have a nice collection of what they like. You might have to write their name on each bottle!

Adidas seems to be aiming itself at a younger market and I would guess that one day they will ALSO be known as "old man" scents.

EDIT: woops, I see you're married. I didn't mean to suggest er well you know what I mean.

Try Mandom. It won't have any Old Man associations here in the US at least.

Or maybe something like Stephens Island Lime? Pretty much a straight up dry lime scent. Lasts pretty well on me. I get mine from Appleton Barber Supply by mailorder. They have a lot of interesting barbershop scents, some of which may not be too Old Man.
