Need advice on travel gear

Looking for advice on a brush and a DE razor for travel. I am new, so I don't really have any preferences yet. I am enjoying shaving with my EJ DE89 but want something more compact for travel.

Thanks in advance.

You can go in one of two ways with travel gear - either go cheap or go relatively compact. The first option is good if you're going away for a few days only and it doesn't matter too much if you don't have the best of the best. In which case I would suggest sticking o your Edwin Jagger or dare I suggest it even a cartridge (particularly useful if you are flying where blades are barred) and a cheap synthetic brush and a stick of Palmolive or Arko.
if one the other hand you want o go compact then yes a travel razor is an idea, but frankly they are not much more compact than normal ones other than have a short handle, which for me makes for aless comfortable shave. In terms of brush you could go with the Simpson's Wee Scot, which is very compact. On soap go with the sticks mentioned above or one of the more premium sticks such as Speick, Valobra or La Toja

I pack my favourite DE razor, brush and cream. Just because I am traveling doesn't mean that I need to suffer. I decant shaving cream, AS and ASB into smaller containers (ie; hotel shampoo/conditioner plastic bottles).

My favorite DE travel gear is to take along both of the Merkur travel DE's, the safety bar and the open comb. They fit into their own very small leather pouch. For my brush I take the Dovo stainless steel travel brush. Its a silvertip 19mm that fits into its own steel tube. The thing is indestructible. These 3 things will take up very little room and are ideal for travel. You can even stick some DE blades into the pouches of the travel razors.

I am a minimalist when traveling. Futur, Arko, a Wee Scot, and a couple tucks of blades is all I need.

Everything fits into a 7" x 6" x 1" pouch. I use Vodka as an AS (and other things too).

Unless you're going on an extreme backpacking trip, I can't imagine that a DE, brush and some cream noticeable add to the size or weight of your bags.
Just pick whatever products you're most comfortable with, shaving on the road is often harder because of the different water, light, etc so you'll be glad to have some reliable stuff on hand.

I'm currently on an extended trip, and have found that my DE (Muhle R41 2011) disassembles to a small enough package. I've also got a Vulfix travel brush which works pretty well. The only problem I am having is disposing of blades. Also, shaving soap sticks are your friend.

but frankly they are not much more compact than normal ones

...this is the bit that baffles me, every time. You can fit my normal razor, soap, brush, aftershave etc inside a shoe inside a suitcase. I think travel razors are a bit like travel spectacles or travel pencils....you dont really need them. That is, unless you want to protect your prize asset. If its that, but a Lord L6 DE....its as good as your EJ but a fraction of the price. As always, though YMMV

Here are some pics of my travel kit. My travel razor is the Muhle equivalent to your Jagger.

My brush is a Rooney 1-1 in Silvertip.

The razor and blades fit into a candy tin (same as Altoids tin)

The soap shown is Cella. I have replaced it with an Arko stick.

Good advise from all. As far as travel razors go, I agree that there's not much advantage to one unless you normally use a one piece TTO.
My normal razor is a Super Adjustable TTO, but when traveling I switch to a Tech that fits nicely in a altoids tin with a pack of Derby's. This is if I'm checking a bag...if going carry-on I just use a Bic Sensitive disposable.

I have several to choose from...but for a DE, it's hard to beat an old superspeed, palmolive stick from Germany and a small AOS Badger brush and container.

My travel kit is bare bones - Semogue 830, Palmolive stick, and disposable razors or a Sensor cart. If I'm not flying, maybe a Gillette ball end Tech that I'm not afraid to lose.

I've tried using a travel razor, but to be honest, there is no point in skimping when travelling. Best case scenario would look something like this:

Sample shave cream/soap
Wee Scott
Merkur travel razor
A/S sample.

In reality, the cost of buying specialist items may not outweigh the potential space savings. I carry the following kit, and it takes up more room, but not enough to make me want to carry the ultimate space saving kit:

Feather portable (or any other 3 piece razor, as it can break down to next to nothing)
Omega Bambino boar brush (larger than a wee scott, but still small)
Shave stick
Small travel bottle filled with a/s

As others have mentioned, the other consideration is the kits value to you if lost. I generally carry items that I don't mind losing/breaking or that I can replace (in current production). The last thing you want to do is endure a miserable shave when you travel.

I agree... I just acquired the Merkur travel razor as I am travelling more for my job. Would highly recommend it! Then I normally take a shave stick (Wilkinson Sword, Erasmic or Palmolive) these sticks are great, very compact and seriously cheap so it doesn't really matter if you lose one in a hotel or campsite or whatever. But they are surprisingly good quality. Plus a travel brush too.

I agree that as long as you are going to check your travel kit so that you can carry DE blades, there is no reason to skimp on your products.

My Kit:
2011 Muhle R41 (I own two. One of them stays in my travel kit)
Bic Disposable Razor. (Used for my nostril area)
Omega 40033 Mighty Midget Boar Brush stored in a Simpson travel tube.
La Toja Travel Stick Soap
Bigelow Cream Decanted in a small screw top plastic pill box.
Noxzema (my pre-shave) Also decanted in a small screw top plastic pill box
Pinaud Clubman Aftershave decanted in a 2 oz. glass screw top bottle.

AN EJ 89 is my travel razor. I bring a pack or two of blades, and use the slot on the back to dispose of used blades. I have an Arko stick, plus a couple of samples of soap, and a cheap VdH brush. I also bring a tube or two of aftershave balm, nothing fancy, Nivea or whatever I get at the supermarket, since I will only use it for travel.
