need advice on brush and soap, please

hello, been wet shaveing all my life with can shaveing cream. Now that I am getting older, I am noticeing that my skin is starting to burn after a shave, more whiskers, I guess. I hear that shaveing soap and bursh is the way to go. I am thinking that its a good way to prepare the skin prior to a shave. I never even seen a brush used in over 40 years, of shaveing. My grandfather use to use shaveing cream out of a can, with a micromatic. I am the one who got his razors, many years ago. I was the only one interested out of 4 other male family members. When I was a kid, I seen my cousin that had heavy wiskers use vasoline prior to can cream. Can someone advise me on what to buy, so I dont waste my money and something where I will not need to upgrade in regards to a brush, soap and dish or whatever. Thanks I appreciate it.

Firtst of all, welcome aboard Papi. To begin, people have a lot of different preferences when it comes to things like brushes (hair type, stiffness, softeness...) and soaps (Tallow/vegetable base, ease of latherability, how moisturizing it is...). To get you started I suggest getting a something like this from Omega, which is both inexpensive, and of good quality.

If you want to start with soaps, as oppsosed to creams, a good place to begin is your local Walgreens, Rite-Aid, or Walmart by picking up a puck of Van der Hagen (VDH) Deluxe soap. If you'd like to go a step further, you can shop around at one of the many fine vendors that frequent the boards here, and pick up some of the more-often discussed soaps.

A good beginners alternative is also to pick up starter kits in the Buy/Sell/Trade Forum or even something like one of these from Omega. The soap in the package is an excellent way to become introduced to wet-shaving products, and is identicle to the oft-touted Proraso.

Hope that helps, and the best of luck!

There is a review page on this site that has all equipment reviewed. I have been using an entry level badger brush by Tweezerman, got it for $16 shipped. The sky's the limit on brush upgrades. A side note, my skin improved after I quit the canned shave stuff, almost instantly.
