Neck Shaving Technique help

I am getting a totally hairless shave from my jaw line up, but less success below the jaw. I use 4 passes, WTG XTG XTG the other way ATG. This just doesn't get all of the hairs below my jaw. They grow from left to right, but i have trouble contorting my face in order to get a clean ATG pass on my neck. How do you get that BBS shave below your jaw?

Thanks B&B

I don't. My neck hair grows in all kinds of crazy sideways directions and at shallow angles. Trying to get BBS just results in irritation for me. I've resigned myself to BBS on my face only.

+1 Me too. The only time I can get close to this is with a Slant or an injector. There are always one or two patches that I miss though.

Those are depressing solutions. I guess with BBS out of the question how do you get the best neck shave possible?

Well, for me it had a lot to do with mapping my growth. I generally do two passes.

The first is WTG which for me is shaving downwards halfway on the sides of my neck and all the way down on the front. The lower half of the sides I shave sideways from the center outward (are you confused yet?).

The second pass is straight down all across (some WTG, some XTG).

This yields a DFS with little to no irritation/ingrowns.

Look up mantics video on advanced shaving techniques. I have good success with j-hooking on my neck. To a lesser extent, the gillette slide works pretty well too.

It seems that the more you try on the neck, the more irritation you'll get. The best way, short of a straight, and you'll still get some with that, is to lightly blade buff. That and try some of Mantic's advanced shave technique's. Just stay off the pressure.

With all the irritation involved with the BBS its better to settle for the DFS. :thumbup1:

The only way I get a BBS on my neck is in a sauna (wet steam) with some shaving oil, or if I am in a shower and shave and finish with shaving oil and multiple passes feeling where the "rough" spots are and going back over and over till I get the level of shave I want. Otherwise I will do a max of 3 passes and just go for the best I can get.

Oh the other thing for me I use a feather blade - I just can't seem to get a good shave with other blades.

To shave closely against the grain in these areas, I slide the razor across my skin at angles like this. I also hold the handle so that the blade is close to parallel to my skin. However, try this carefully, because with most razors it is an efficient technique for ripping yourself to shreds. (I use a Goodfella, which does this safely.)

It may be worth spending an extra 60 seconds massaging lather into your neck to see if it makes a difference. Even if it seems like a ridiculously long time to brush lather in it can make a noticeable difference.

Also use some witch hazel both to bring the hairs out and prevent irritation after your WTG pass(es).

If you can keep your blade lying flat, lightly buff.

If not (ie the grain is not straight up or down) then use slide technique. Make sure to try it angled both directions because you might be surprised at the more effective direction.

I have the same problem and have abandoned my efforts to get a true BBS shave there. Not worth the irritation. Comfort > smoothness for me any day.

For the area just under the jawline, there is a solution. After initial reduction, bullfrog your neck and apply light ATG passes. Works for me, but of course YMMV.
